The US Attorney forwarded the case to the FBI in St. Paul as a potential violation of the White Slave Traffic Act.

Nettie claimed that Leonard had deserted her on 16 Apr 1921 and had gone away with a woman named Maud Day. The FBI agent that contacted Nettie found that she had no further information, except that Leonard and Maud had apparently left Faribault on 26 Apr 1921. The file said, "Through acquaintances she has heard at various times that they were in Canada somewhere, and she has also heard that they were in different places in Iowa. Her husband is a salesman, having worked for the White Sewing Machine Company." The agent told her that until she could furnish some idea of Leonard's location, no investigation could be made.

So, on 21 June, she reported by letter that "she received information from the mother of Maud Day that a letter had been received from Maud Day in which she stated that she is working in a cafe in Omaha, Nebraska...No mention is made of Leonard Temple." The FBI retained the information in case it would later prove that Leonard "did induce or transport her interstate for an immoral purpose."

The Omaha FBI office began to watch the mail of Maud Day, but found nothing. They checked with the Coos and Waitresses Union in Omaha, who knew nothing of Maud Day.

Then, on 14 July, Nettie wrote "...since my writing you his folks received a letter from a strange woman at Omaha. She wrote if they wanted any information regarding their son Leonard to write to her or if they wanted to write to him to send it to her and she would see he got it." The woman was Della Margraf Hoover.

Finally, on 11 Aug 1921, Nettie wrote the FBI that "I received a telegram the other day at Faribault from my husband and am out here [St. Paul] at the present time and find some of the things which were told me about him were untrue. He is working out here, so you may drop this matter in regard to him. I am sorry for any trouble I caused you and thanking you very much. Sorry there was such a misunderstanding."

The FBI closed the case on 30 Aug 1921. His obituary, dated 23 Feb, said he had died "last noght" which would indicate no earlier than 22 Feb, Find-A-Grave says 20 Feb but offered no proof.
Buried in Smith Mountain Cemetery, Dinuba, CA, Plot: Block 1, Row 13A, Grave 31. His birth year varies wildly in 1910 and 1920, if he is L.C. Temple in 1910 and Leonard in 1920.

It is very tempting to equate L.C. and his wife Hattie with Leonard and Hattie of Dinuba, CA, in 1920. Despite the fact that they also have a daughter Christine, the mismatches in their ages means that they probably are not the same ones. Alternatively, it is even more tempting to equate L.C. as Leonard C. Temple, son of Leonard A. and Mahalda (Hopper) Temple, but there is a 12 year discrepancy in their birth years.

His parents were both from TN. I think he is Leonard C. Temple, and she is Hallie Brannon, but the mismatches in specific data prevent my combining them. Parents: Leonard A. TEMPLE-33756 and Mahulda (Hulda) HOPPER-33757.

Awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal, and Distinguished Flying Cross. Cemetery records in Nashville give his death date as 10 Oct 1944, which reflects the Air Force accident report of his loss and a 1961 headstone application. Part of the problem is that he was also said to have been buried on 10 Oct 1944 at Fort William McKinley, Manila. Said to be missing, however, over the Pacific. He was lost while piloting B-24J 44-40368 while assigned to the 400th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomb Group on a mission dated 10 Oct 1944. The date of death in 1942 is from his pension and headstone information, and is incorrect according to his accident report.

"There is a history of Benton, WI Temples moving and migrating to California. I do know this. Leonard was my grandfather. He died when I was about 2 in 1967. At that time, and all relevant times preceding he was in Benton, WI. He farmed there and lived in a beautiful farmhouse built circa 1848 with my grandmother, Hilda Davis Temple. She was a very sober Welsh woman, and they attended the Primitive Methodist Church in Benton. Leonard and Hilda are buried side by side in the cemetery of the Church. The home has since left the family because of the passing of my grandmother several years back. The street on which the home sits in Benton, WI is known as Temple Avenue. (Benton is lucky to have a population of 950.) That region of southwest WI and northwest IL was very popular with immigrants and settlers because it was rich for mining (lead).

"Back to the house for a moment. The way my dad tells it, his grandparents John and Lenora lived in that house as well. I don't know who built it, though. It couldn't have been John Elsworth if he was born in 1861." Parents: John Elsworth (John) TEMPLE-38494 and Lenora Diana Sitton (Nora) GIBSON-38495.
