Robert TEMPLE1966,120108 was born in 1639 in Salem, Essex, MA.38767,120108,120109 Although some sources place his birth in England, this does not fit with the timing of his father's immigration. He a member of a coroner's jury in 1670 in Saco, York, ME.2965 He died in 1675 at the age of 36 in Saco, York, ME.2965,45193,118568 Killed by Indians in Philips War. Born 1639 or earlier. Probably went to Saco, ME, soon afterward. Robert Temple had a son Richard, born in Saco in 1675. His son Richard settled in Reading, MA, and founded a large family whose genealogy is being prepared by Rev. Edward Foster Temple, a descendant. Tradition is that he was killed by Indians in 1675. Captain Robert TEMPLE15813,61090,120111,120112,120113 was born in 1691 in County Cork, Ireland.14531,61090,120114 Date of 1691 based on age at time of death. Other sources like the History of Revere, MA, give 1694. He immigrated in 1717 to Boston, Suffolk, MA.14531,106137,120114 Some research claimed incorrectly that Temple acquired a large tract of land along the Kennebeck River from its original owner, one Christopher Lawson. Lawson had gotten the land from the Indians and named it "Ireland." Temple renamed it "Ten Hills."

Research by Christopher Wright, a graduate student at the University of Maine at Orono, turned up the actual story. His research shows that "The piece that Capt. Temple purchased he received from the Clarke & Lake Proprietors specifically Col. Thomas Hutchinson. Furthermore, he did not outright purchase the land until 1725. All this including the boundaries of the site come from the York County Registry of Deeds (York County Registry of Deeds, Book 12:185 – 186, Ann Mather & to Robt Temple, September 30th 1725). In most cases the description of the property in early historical works is quite specific, but somehow historians got it wrong and put Cork and the opposite side of the River where Bath is. However, the modern town of Dresden is where Cork was situated. And some historians speculate that while the later German immigrants overtook the Irish, the Irish place names that exist are a result of the original Cork Settlers." He lived Noddle's Island in Charlestown, Suffolk, MA in 1720.80205 He was a lessee of Noddle's Island. Robert lived Ten Hills in "Ten Hills", Boston, Suffolk, MA in 1740.80205 He bought the estate in 1740, although he continued to live at both Noddle's Island and Newgate farms. He lived Newgate Farms in Charlestown, Suffolk, MA in 1742.80205 He died on 14 April 1754 at the age of 63 in Woburn, Middlesex, MA.15813,22003,32118,61088,106137 Prominent Americans and Massachusetts Historical Society give 14 Apr 1754; others give the dame date as the death of his wife. The History of Revere, MA, also changes the location to Charlestown. Formerly a Captain in the Irish Army, came to America with Capt James Luzmore of Topsham, England.

Robert purchased land on the Kennebec River and Merry Meeting Bay in Maine and during 1718-1719, he brought over several hundred Scotch-Irish settlers aboard five ships in an attempt to found a colony called Temple Bar (now Bath, Maine). Dummer's Indian War broke up this colony. Captain Penhallow, writing to the Governor of Massachusetts on 15 Jun 1722 mentioned the fight which broke up the colony. The larger part of them went to Pennsylvania. Robert (and possibly his father) returned to East Boston, where in time he built himself a fine mansion. He has a pew in the old North Church in Boston to this day. Later, in 1750, he purchased the estate called Ten Hills, on the Mystic River. Temple was of a distinguished family in Ireland, and the ancestor of the numerous and respected family of the late Lt. Governor Thomas L. Winthrop of Boston, who married his grand-daughter Elizabeth Bowdoin. He was a Tory in the Revolution.

His will gave the Ten Hills farm to his wife, farm at Chelsea, and Negroes "Bandon," "Kerry," and "Mallow." John received the Mount farm at Worcester, the farm at Eastward, and Negroes "Dutchess," "Sambo," and "Limerick." William received farms at Kennebec and Woburn, and Negro "Jack." It was renamed the National Bank of Rutland in 1866. He died on 6 October 1834 at the age of 51 in Rutland, Rutland, VT.22003,38570,38575,120126 The cause of his death is not recorded in the sources available. However, the following may apply to him.

"Learning that some of the Pension Agents had been withholding portions of the pensions due to Revolutionary veterans, general Jackson had the charges thoroughly investigated, and a list of the pensioners printed, showing what each one was entitled to receive. This disclosed the fact that some of the Pension Agents had been continuing to draw the pensions of deceased soldiers for years after their death, besides retaining portions of the pensions of others. Robert Temple, Pension Agent in Vermont, on hearing of the proposed investigation, hastened to Washington, where he endeavored to bribe a clerk to falsify the list made out for the printer. The clerk obtained from him a list of sixty names of deceased soldiers whose pensions he had continued to draw, and gave it to the Secretary of War. Temple, on learning this, committed suicide." Another source added that he first burned all his papers, and then committed suicide. He apparently was found out not because the soldiers were deceased, but because he took the pensions of some still living veterans, who thought they had been removed from the pension rolls and then reapplied in the early 1830s. Since they were already drawing pensions, this drew attention to the problem.

Buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rutland, VT. Noted for his wit and repartee.

The Prominent Families of the United States of America gives his two wives children with similar names, but with confusing or absent birth dates, so assignment to the two wives is a problem. Specifically, Clara, Mary and Charlotte, daughters of Clarissa Hawkins, are given by Prominent Families as also children of Charlotte Eloise Green. If they were the children of his first marriage, as given in some sources, all three girls were single and very old for their first marriages in the 1850s. There seems no good answer for whether there were two sets of girls with these three names, or whether the girls, born between 1806 and 183, did not marry until in their 30s or 40s. Parents: Lt. Gov. William TEMPLE-4630 and Amy FITCH-4638.

Robert TEMPLE47107 was born after 1790 in Spartanburg Co., SC.105562 He appeared in the census in 1816 in Amite Co., MS.120129 Enumerated with 1 white male. He appeared in the census in 1841 in Franklin Co., MS.83848 There is no conclusive evidence of his relationship with these parents. The placement of Robert stems from his closeness to Henry in the Amite Co., Census of 1816 and subsequent. Temple Family concludes they were either brothers or close cousins. That leaves open the possibility that Robert was the son of Henry, Jesse's brother. I have not chosen to place him there based on timing (they would have been too far apart to be "close") and placement (the families of Henry and Jesse seem to have moved into separate parts of the Carolinas, making "closeness" of cousins unlikely.

Temple People also makes conjectures about children, which are included here. Parents: Jesse TEMPLE-16098 and RUSH-24358.
