He appeared in the census in 1841 in Marion Co., MS.83848 Enumerated with 1 male and 4 females. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Marion Co., MS.4680 In August 1860 Jacob was a farmer in Columbia, Marion, MS.4679 He has reference number RLT # W69.26263 The separation of wives and children among Jacob and his brother James is very confusing with many sources disagreeing. Jacob claimed his parents were both from MS in the 1880 census. Also, in 1880, enumerated with Jacob and Elizabeth, listed as a daughter ae 14, is Mary Bosieth (the writing is illegible), but whose daughter she is I cannot tell (although I suspect her mother is Elizabeth).

I further suspect that some wife/wives and children attributed to this Jacob actually belong to his son of the same name. By the time Marshall Temple came along, this Jacob was in his 60s, but his son was in his 30s. Parents: Jones TEMPLE(S)-17176 and Sarah -17177.

Spouse: Jemima JOYCE-17188. Jemima JOYCE and Jacob TEMPLE(S) were married on 18 October 1822 in Marion Co., MS.48497 Marion County records indicate she was considered a minor until just before her marriage to Jacob Temples. She had been in the guardianship of William Lott, who was administering the estate of William Joyce. Lott gave his consent for her marriage. In marriage book A, p. 245. Children were: Elizabeth TEMPLES-16374, Jones R. (J.R.) TEMPLES-17190.

Spouse: Maindy -17203. Maindy and Jacob TEMPLE(S) were married about 1834. Children were: William J. TEMPLES-17191, Elizabeth TEMPLES-17192, Jacob TEMPLES-17193, Amy TEMPLE-17194, Matthew J. TEMPLES-17204, Francis TEMPLE-17195.

James TEMPLE(S)13680 was born in 1794 in GA.129720 He appeared in the census in 1841 in Marion Co., MS.83848 Enumerated with 2 males and 2 females. In August 1860 he was a farmer in Columbia, Marion, MS.129720 Enumerated alone in the household of John and Lydia Ford, of no known relationship. James died after 1876 at the age of 82.621 He has reference number RLT # W68.62050 Appears with the terminal S in 1860 and in his son T.J.'s death certificate. Some sources confuse the wives of Jacob and James. The separation of wives and children among Jacob and his brother James is very confusing with many sources disagreeing.

Also, some sources consider James, husband of Elizabeth Burt (also given as Byrt) as the son of Frederick and Mary Temples. This conjecture is possible, because the children of Frederick and Mary are for the most part unknown. This also awaits proof. Parents: Jones TEMPLE(S)-17176 and Sarah -17177.

Spouse: Elizabeth BURT-17186. Elizabeth BURT and James TEMPLE(S) were married on 17 December 1815 in Tattnall Co., GA.8054,13681,19404,19405 Children were: Fenna TEMPLES-67948, George Andrew (Andrew) TEMPLES-67949.

James TEMPLE(S) was born in 1809 in Smith Co., TN.5125,5126,5128,63978 He appeared in the census in 1830 in Smith Co., TN.5124 He appeared in the census in 1840 in Smith Co., TN.5124 In 1850 James was a farmer in Macon Co., TN.5125 In July 1860 he was a farmer in Tompkinsville, Monroe, KY.5126 In June 1870 he was a farm laborer in Macon Co., TN.5128 James died. He has reference number RLT # U4233.4504 The relationship of James to the brothers John, Alexander and Daniel needs to be proved. Appears with the terminal S in 1870. He may have had a first wife, Mary Coley. His wife Martha claimed to have had only 1 child. Also the death records for his son William indicates his mother's name as Mary Coley. Parents: John TEMPLES-32334 and Sarah PATTERSON-32335.

Spouse: Mary COLEY-81315. Mary COLEY and James TEMPLE(S) were married about 1829. Children were: Daniel TEMPLE(S)-30821, Richard TEMPLE(S)-30827, Franklin (Franky) TEMPLE-30828, Elizabeth (Betsy) TEMPLES-33889, Ann TEMPLES-33890, Sally TEMPLE-30829, William J. TEMPLE(S)-30830.

James TEMPLE(S) was born in 1817 in GA.3817,3818,5244 Gave his age as 67 in 1870. He appeared in the census in 1840 in Early Co., GA.2335 Enumerated next to his father and between his father and Andrew Temples (ae 20-30), who may be a brother. Age given as 30-40, with 1 son under 5, and one daughter under 5, with a wife ae 20-30. Whatever age he gave in 1840, he must surely have been on the low end of the age range. He appeared in the census in August 1850 in Early Co., GA.3817 Enumerated next door to his brother William, his brother Frederick's family, and near his parents. In July 1860 James was a turpentiner in Early Co., GA.3818 Enumerated next door to William Holden and Judy Temples. Spouse: UNKNOWN-156222.

James A. TEMPLE(S) was born between 1754 and 1759 in Anson Co., NC.89825 He lived in SC about 1775. He served in the military between 1776 and 1781.129724 Served in the South Carolina line during the Revolution for about five years, but recollections and pension records give varying accounts of 3, 4 and 5 years (nonetheless it was a substantial time). He served with Captain Ledbetter under General Weatherford, and later with Captain Green under General Sumter. His wife's pension application claimed he served under Captain Wise in a company of Cavalry. Additional testimony puts James in the service of Colonel David Love for a term of 6 months, after which he continued to serve in another unit. According to an affidavit in Rachel's 1838 pension application, while James was in a regiment of cavalry commanded by Col. Sam Hammond, he received severe and disfiguring wounds, which brought him to the personal attention of Hammond who remembered him all those years alter. He received these severe wounds at a battle near Charleston in May 1780, which sounds like he was at Buford's Defeat. Applied for a pension 1 Nov 1824. Also had two daughters, unnamed in his pension application.

The supposition about his having been at Buford's Defeat was bolstered by the research of Robert M. Temples, who provided the following affidavit:

"To the Honorable the Members of the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina.

"The Humble petition of James Temples a Revolutionary Soldier most Respectfully showeth That he Served as a Volunteer Soldier in the militia of South Carolina in the Revolutionary War constantly for upwards of five years, vis.,.first under Capt. John Ledbetter who was under the command of Gen. Weatherford he believes for about two years and one half in and near Charleston and between that & Savannah and in various parts of the State. That during that time he was in a skirmish near the Sister ferry with the British and one with the Tories on Black River besides other skirmishes. That he was then under Capt Green commanded by Gen. Sumpter the remainder of the time and was severely wounded in a small battle or skirmish near Charleston with the British and Tories combined in which he received seven wounds from the British horseman, four in the head, once in his neck near his shoulder so very severe as to cause his shoulder and arm greatly to perish away and comparatively to become useless within two years from that time (about two years before the war ended. The wounds received in May, [Note, the British attacked Charleston, May 10th then travel north to Waxhaw by May 29th] and has remained useless ever since so much so that he never has been able to feed himself with it. A pretty severe one in his face and another in the other arm. That he never has received a cent from the United States. That his discharge is lost and that he has in family four small grand children and two daughters and is utterly unable by reason of his wounds to maintain himself or them and that he is very poor having no lands or negroes and but little stock not enough to support upon and that he has no one to look to for support. He therefore prays your Honorable Body to grant him a reasonable sum from the time of his wounds to the present period or such other relief as a poor distressed soldier may require.

Robert added his own commentary as follows:

"He (James A. Temples) refers for further explanation and facts to the ... certificates and affidavits to his ... & Represented ... In granting the above petition he will as in duty bound ever. Signed, James Temples. Sworn to before me this 1st Nov. 1824, signed David (?) Bird C.C.P.(?)

"He was granted his request December 1824. The pension was retroactive to 1822 and the first payment was received 1825 for $180. The pension continued until 1829 (his death) at $60 per year.

"Another account my him stated that he was captured by the British in Charleston, but managed to escape. His wounds could have been either in Charleston or any other battles after that including Buford’s Defeat."

In the same file, the testimony of S. Hammond was included in support of Rachel's pension application in 1838, in which Hammond said:

Being requested to state what I know of the revolutionary service of the within named James Temple, I can only state that I knew him for some time in service while I was in command of a regiment of Cavalry, mostly State Troops [Colsire?] the time. I did know the he frequently served with detachments from my regiment in Partisan [Examtions?] and upon one of these he received so severe [ ] force hollow, [ ] which very much disfigured him he was taken to the Hospital which brought him more favorably to my notice and placed him more strongly upon my memory, having read the foregoing declaration of his Widow Rachel Temple, and the testimony of all, I only [?] sincerely support that what is therein stated is correct and willing to certify. Certified 29th November 1838.

Further research by Robert Temples, <roberttemples@comcast.net>, came across a document in the National Archives of the UK. It seems that James was indeed in the battles as cited, but at the time, he was fighting for the British side, and had he not done so, he would not have been taken to the refugee hospital and received the care he did. He had received 7 bayonet wounds to his face, shoulder and neck that lost him use of his arm - very serious wounds at that time. Robert provided the following transcript from the UK Archives:

“(PRO T50, Vol 6) Nr, (Public Records Office)

"Memorial of James Temple of Camden District, Colonel Ballentine’s Regiment. To Lieut Colonel Nisbet Balfour, esquire, commanding his 23rd Regiment, Royal Welch Fusiliers and commandant of Charleston, SC. Petitioner served with the British Troops from the return of British Government until he entered into the militia under Colonel Ballentine’s command and received only two months pay. He was one of the number taken and wounded near Ashley Ferry, and sent on command of General Gold’s orders. His wounds rendered him incapable of duty from that time onward. He performed the duty of a sergeant from 1 Sept till he was wounded in November. Signed by James Temple Petitioner was one of Captain Hector McNeill’s men in North Carolina who made his escape to Camden and joined the British. When he left North Carolina, he went to Georgia where he stayed until Feb. 1781; then he came to Camden and joined Captain Hugh’s company of militia, and received pay for the time!

"He served in that company which he left in the beginning of June last. He joined the militia at Monk’s Corner a few days before the action at the Eutaws and lost the use of his arm by a wound he received last November. Colonel Ballentine, who has endorsed the petition, should recollect that he already paid the men in his company. Petitioner has been loyal and lost his home on account of his service. He has also lost the use of his arm. Signed by Robert Gray and William Ballentine.” James lived in Jefferson Co., GA about 1788.11205,22847 Rachel's pension application said she and James lived in Jefferson County for 27 years, immediately preceding their move to Edgefield, SC. Since they were in Edgefield for 14 years before James' death, that would put them in Jefferson County from 1788 to 1815. He moved about 1815 in Edgefield Co., SC.11205,22847 Rachel's pension application said that she and James moved to Edgefield District, SC, 14 years before James' death. That would place the date in 1815. Some researchers put the move in 1792, but that makes no sense according to the dates and durations given by Rachel's 1839 pension application. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Edgefield Co., SC.11208 James granted a Revolutionary War pension in 1822 in SC.129725 While the initial review approved his application in 1822, the SC Senate's Committee on Pensions took another two years (until 30 Nov 1824) to agree. Subsequently, in December 1824, the Committee placed him on the pension roles and granted him arrears, effective 1 March 1823. He received his first payment on 1 Mar 1824, which continued through 1 Mar 1829. He died on 6 September 1829 at the age of 75 in Edgefield Co., SC.1941,11207,22847 He may be the son of Joseph and Sarah (Snowden) Temple. However, his association with SC needs to be resolved. Parents: Frederick TEMPLE-34134.

Spouse: Rachel BALY-34138. Rachel BALY and James A. TEMPLE(S) were married on 6 January 1774 in Anson Co., NC.11205,11207 James' pension application gave the date as 4 Jan 1778, but Rachel's later application in 1838 gave the date as shown. Some read the date as 2 January, but the pension application clearly has a "th" after the numeral, and that rules out a 2. The better reading seems to be 6th day of January. The testimony of Rebecca Arrignton, who claimed to be a witness to the marriage, claimed it was "in the time of the War of the Revolution in the year 1778 this October the 15th 1840." It is not clear if she was simply unreliable, the language and phrasing is not understood (lacking punctuation), or what the discrepancy might be. It was Rebecca's testimony that the Pension Office doubted as proof of Rachel's marriage to James, possibly because of the considerable disparity in the dates claimed. They11205,11207 were married before 1782. Children were: Sarah TEMPLE-34139, John Calvin TEMPLE(S)-34142, Thomas TEMPLE-34143, James A.
