Estate of Peter Temple filed March 20, 1854, Hancock Co., Illinois. Copy of original estate papers in possession of Joan Glasgow. He may also have married Margaret Reddich. He may be the son of Michael and Catherine (Haefner) Temple. Based on the suspicious coincidence of being in Montebello, IL, at around the same time, I am suspicious that he is indeed the son of a John Temple, and that he had siblings John (b 1823) and George (b 1834). If they weren't siblings, they were apparently close, and possibly cousins. The naming similarities of Peter's children and those of John and Mary A. Temple are very close, with nearly the same order of children, at about the same dates, and they ended up in the same county in IL.

In the 1880 census his daughter Anna Cynthia Temple Agnew, states that her father was born in Pennsylvania. His son George says he was born in Ohio.

1850 Census, the town of Gilmer, Adams, Illinois, enumerated the 28th day of Sept, 1850, shows his wife to be "Sally," really Sarah. He was 39 and she was 37 both born in Ohio. Their children were, William, Mary E., John, Ann, George, and Sarah. All born in Ohio.

Email from Joseph Janson noted that his GGGfather is John Gifford Temple, son of Peter. He noted that they were from Middleton, Ohio

Daniel Doty is considered the "father" of Middletown but it was Stephen Vail, who in 1802 platted fifty-two lots from his one hundred acre purchase. Doty was the pioneer, the first to settle in the vicinity of Middletown. In 1796, he brought his family from New Jersey to live in the "Little Prairie," the name he had given the area he had first explored in 1791. Vail was the farmer and land speculator, naming his plat Middle-town. Perhaps, he believed the location on the Great Miami River would be in the middle of what would become Butler County in 1803.

After John's death, some of his children apparently were raised by his brother Peter, which has muddled the lines between the two brothers. The key differentiator was the 1850 census, where the children were assumed to be properly aligned. That means both John and Peter had sons named George, born within a year of each other. The open question is whether Sarah Jane was the daughter of John or Peter. I included Sarah Jane with Peter because his wife was named Sarah, so that needs proof. I am a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1861 I graduated from the Homeopathic Medical College of St. Louis and moved into town the same year. Between 1854 and 1860 there had been several homeopathic physicians, mostly Germans, located here, but none of them stayed long enough to make any impression on the community. When I came I found a Dr. Williams practicing. Notwithstanding the prejudice against homeopathy I soon got a very good practice. Being favorably known by the citizens generally as an allopathic physician formerly, I gained access to many families whose doors would have otherwise been shut against me. My son, Dr. J. R. Temple, became my partner in 1867. At the death of my son in March, 1871, I associated with Dr. G. W. Barker."" Peter died on 18 March 1889 in Lexington, Lafayette, MO.^{41151,49932,49933} Rise of the Temples listed year as about 1890. Cemetery records give his burial as 20 Mar 1889, having died of pneumonia. However, the same records say he was 78y, but the known dates for him made him 76 when he died. Buried in the Machpelah Cemetery, Lexington, MO, but he is listed only in their records; no gravestone found. Said to be in plot A-8-1. Peter TEMPLE¹⁸⁵²⁷ was born in 1814 in Bridgeport, Dorsetshire, England.¹⁸⁵²⁷ He immigrated in 1857 to Brantford, Brant, Ontario, Canada.¹⁷⁶⁵⁰ In 1858 he was a locomotive engineer in Brantford, Brant, Ontario, Canada.¹⁷⁶⁵⁰ In 1871 Peter was a locomotive engineer in Hamilton, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada.^{7706,17650,18527} In the 1871 census, they have a five year old girl living with them, whom Juli Shore believes was their granddaughter by their daughter Eliza. I suspect it was through one of the boys if she is listed as a Temple, however. He died on 14 September 1872 in Brantford, Brant, Ontario, Canada.¹⁸⁵²⁷ Identification of the Peter who died this date in Brantford with Peter, who was father of George Temple of the same place, is probably wrong. When the latter George died in 1874, the informant was his father, Peter, who was apparently quite alive in 1874. There were two Peter Temples in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in the 1871, both in the same Ward, and both of them were engine drivers. But they are clearly different people.
