Judy, as her older siblings called her, grew up in Morton on the farm her father homesteaded in Washington Territory. She helped with the farm chores and it was while milking twice a day with her dad that she heard and learned about her family history Dad was full of these, she says. She has passed on this oral history to her granddaughter Laurel Wanrow.
Judy went to college, studying biology and chemistry to be a nutritionist. Before finishing she married and had two girls. She lived in rural towns of Morton and Randle, WA, gardening, canning produce, raising the girls and working to make ends meet while Louis worked away at a variety of jobs. Sometimes the family would join him, including stays in CA, Roche Harbor in the San Juan Islands and Alaska. Judy and Louis divorced and she returned with the girls to Washington to live. She worked as a chef in restaurants in Chehalis & Olympia, often managing the accounts as well. She retired in the late 1970's, still cooking, gardening, crocheting and keeping chickens at her daughter's house in Olympia. In the late 1980's she moved to an apartment and continues to cook and teach cooking to the chore girls who help her maintain an independent living.
