During WW2, Herbert Friedman was employed by the US Navy maintaining aircraft instrumentation. Between 1946 and 1953 he was a gas stattion employee.35393 After 1953 Herbert was a gas station owner.35393 He was the manager of his own gas stations. He died on 30 March 1991 at the age of 81 in Silver Spring, Montgomery, MD.140,35393 Buried in King David Cemetery, Falls Church, VA. His sister Dorothy remembered him this way: There was a reason I always called my brother, "Brother." I loved to watch him shave. The sink had a little hole on the top rim and the soap bubbles would float up and fall through that hole. Fascinating!! So one day I was watching the bubbles and said, "Herbert, why do those bubbles do that?" He turned to me and, in no uncertain terms, said, "Dotsie, don't ever call me Herbert again. I am your brother and that's what you will call me." Now that I look back on that incident, I have a feeling he didn't want people to think I was his daughter. Could that be? I never got an answer to that question.
"He bought me my first and only Christmas tree when I was about 7. How GREAT was that? I think I really believed in Santa Claus because when I woke up on Christmas morning, Santa had eaten the cookies and emptied the cup of tea.
"He used to take me to Hamilton Street in Washington to a store where they sold my favorite sucker. It was called a Black Cow. One day I asked him to take me to get my suckers and he said, "What street is that on? Somehow I couldn't get my mouth around the word "Hamilton". He told me when I could say "Hamilton" he would take me. I was amazed. How would I get my suckers? I don't remember if he gave up and finally took me because I did get my suckers. I'm telling you this story because when I got my first job at the Red Cross, I was assigned as a secretary to Mrs. Hedian and Mrs. HAMILTON. I told her this story and she laughed and asked if I could manage to answer her phone. I spent many an hour saying, "Mrs. Hamilton's office, may I help you?"
"Brother taught me lots of things. He encouraged me to be a Girl Scout. He helped me learn how to tie difficult knots so I could pass my level. He carved the Girl Scout logo out of a heavy pie of leather, filled the carving with gold paint and presented it to my group. It was beautiful and I was very proud.
"He brought home a sled one winter and we went sledding down the hill in the Walter Reed Hospital complex.
"We walked in the snow all over Rock Creek Park and then stopped and had hot chocolate to warm us up.
"He was dating a girl (I don't remember her first name, but her last name was Hamburg.) I thought that was the funniest name I ever heard. Not only that, I didn't care too much for her because she was using up the time from my brother more than I liked. She lived in Norfolk which was too far away for him to commute every weekend. I think he gave up on Hamburg. Then he met Florence Lunch (I thought THAT was even funnier than Hamburg-especially when you put those two names together.) He must have loved Florence more because he married her when I was about 9 years old. She was very nice to me and I liked her."
Brother and Florence had a son, Edward Jay Friedman. Brother used to tell me how Eddie would never amount to anything or even be able to make it to graduating high school. He wouldn't study, he wouldn't pass any tests, etc. Poor Brother, he was so worried about his Eddie.
Whenever there was any activity with the Friedmans and the Weisels, Florence (and I can hear her now) would always announce "Well here we are!"
P.S. Ed turned out to be a BRAIN. He worked on the Hubble Space project no less and is very well known in his field. He co-authored a book, Optical Communications Rules of Thumb." Ed (as he is now known) sent Frank and me a copy of it. Neither of us could understand any of it. I thanked him for sending it and told him I was proud of him. I told him I thought it was a great book, but I still couldn't figure out who the murderer was. That comment went right over his head.
He married a lovely girl, Judith Shuman. Her mother and father (Betty and Sidney) kept in touch with us although they lived in Maryland and we were in Virginia. In fact, I went to school with Judith's mother Betty. She quit school to get married before Sidney went overseas. I was Matron of Honor at Edward and Judith's wedding. They now have many grandchildren from their two daughters. They live in Colorado.
Brother was so talented. He was quite an inventor-He found he could work with plexiglass(?) and made some beautiful things with it. He made Florence a jewelry box lined with black velvet. He made me a knitting needle box for long needles which someone will get from me although I doubt it will ever be used because it was especially made for knitting needles. I just wish all that he made could have been patented. I think he could have been a wealthy man.
Parents: Kulmann (Charles Kolman) FRIEDMAN-5 and Esther KAHN-6.

Spouse: Florence LUNCH-121623. Florence LUNCH and Herbert Moses FRIEDMAN were married on 8 June 1939.35393 Children were: Ed FRIEDMAN-121624.

Hinrl (Annie) FRIEDMAN35394 was born in May 1886 in Russia.35395 She immigrated on 19 March 1891 to Baltimore, Baltimore, MD.35380,35395 1900 Census gave 1892. In June 1900 she was a racket saleslady in Norfolk City, VA.35395 Hinrl died. Living in Norfolk City, VA in 1900 census. Spelling of name on the Shipping Manifest is uncertain. She was recalled as the oldest of three sisters of Charles Friedman, but that does not match with the tentative identification in immigration records.

Dorothy Friedman Weisel recalled of her "Aunt Annie was the oldest sister. Then came Aunt Rose and Aunt Jennie. Aunt Rose lived in Newport News and we visited often because it didn't take too long to get to her on the ferry. She was such a good cook and used to load us up with food to take home. Yum. Aunt Jennie lived in Norfolk so we saw a lot of her. She loved to play with little Frank. She also was a very good cook. She always invited us for the Seder. She used to make wonderful meatballs served in a lovely bowl. Wait a minute, it wasn't just meatballs in that lovely bowl---it was chicken feet which stood up in all their glory. I thought Frank [Dorothy's husband] would faint when he saw those feet in that bowl. Needless to say, he didn't eat the meatballs either." Parents: Julius SCHOLMAN FRIEDMAN-9 and Zerl (Sarah Fay/Fannie) FRIEDMAN-10.

Spouse: Boris BAYDUSH-121666. Hinrl (Annie) FRIEDMAN and Boris BAYDUSH were married before 1910. Children were: Leo BAYDUSH-121973, Junius BAYDUSH-121974.

Israel FRIEDMAN was born in Russia.35396 He died. Family oral history said his given name was Moses. However, his daughter Fannie's death certificate, informed by E.C. Friedman, said his name was Israel, but gave no further details beyond birthplace. E.C. Friedman lived at 302 West 30th Street, Norfolk, VA, at the time. It is most likely that he was Emanuel Charles Friedman (1890-21 Dec 1940) who d in Miami, FL.

Spouse: Deborah FRIEDMAN-19. Deborah FRIEDMAN and Israel FRIEDMAN were married before 1850. Children were: Zerl (Sarah Fay/Fannie) FRIEDMAN-10, Benjamin (Benjie) FRIEDMAN-121956.

Jeannette Beatrice (Jeannette) FRIEDMAN35397,35398 was born on 18 February 1913 in Norfolk City, VA.35381,35392,35399,35400,35401 She appeared in the census in January 1920 in Winston-Salem, Forsyth, NC.35392 In April 1930 she was a picture framing store clerk in Washington, DC.35381 Jeannette appeared in the census in April 1940 in Washington, DC.35399 She lived 7444 Georgia Avenue NW in Washington, DC in October 1940.35402 She appeared in the census in April 1950 in Washington, DC.35401 Jeannette died on 23 April 1998 at the age of 85 in Prescott Valley, Yavapai, AZ.7857,35403 Dorothy Friedman remembered her sister this way: "Jeannette was 11-years older than I so she couldn't possibly "play with me." She did "baby sit" me for quite a while. She took me across the street to the Walter Reed complex. I loved playing in their beautiful gardens and spent many hours there in the summer. The sunken rose garden was in full bloom and had benches you could sit on, read a book (if you could read) and smell the roses. It also had a small fish pond in the center of the garden which Jeannette "backed" me into because I was giving her a hard time about not wanting to go home right then. I went home dripping wet and not very happy.
"She was very popular and had many friends. I loved being with her. She wore beautiful clothes, had beautiful shoes and pocketbooks. Very stylish young lady. She and I slept in a double bed in the apartment and I would always go to sleep on her side of the bed because I could smell her cologne on her pillow. She had to wake me up some nights so she could sleep on her side of the bed. She got a job in the Census Department in Philadelphia when I was about 10. I visited her soon after her moving there. I did miss her. Jeannette took me shopping in Wanamaker's (very famous department store) and I still remember what that dress looked like. It was turquoise and had embroidered brown squares over the whole dress. I loved it.
"While I was visiting Philadelphia, I met Lafayette Parker Temple (Temp) whom I fell in love with him on sight. He was so handsome and polite. He liked me too. He told me I reminded him of a very young colt (all legs and little body). At the time I was flattered that he paid enough attention to me to notice how I looked. He would be my future brother-in-law. He always joked that he had married the wrong sister.
"Then came their daughter, Faye. I was so fascinated with her, watching her drinking from a bottle and getting her diaper changed. How interesting a baby is when you are only 11. She used to sit on the sofa and rock back and forth until I thought her brains would fall out. They are still interesting when you are older-only they are way more work.
"Faye was a cute little girl and she fell in "love" with ABUUU-His name was Edward and he was the janitor in the apartment where Jeannette and Temp lived. He was so good to her. I can see them now-walking along the sidewalk holding hands because Faye wasn't so steady on her feet.
"The Temples had a son named after Temp. We called him Buddy. I believe Jeannette and I were pregnant at the same time. He must be around the age of Charles-I think that's how it was. Buddy was very smart-he graduated from the Air Force Academy and went on to do something VERY secretive for the government. Never did know what that was and really didn't care. He was never very outgoing or friendly with us peasants.
"That is all I know of Buddy except whenever he would come to visit Sun City to visit his parents (which was not very often) he would call me and ask me to make him my Wacky Cake which was his favorite. I made it for him and he rang my doorbell, didn't come in and took his cake and left. Very little conversation. I don't believe I ever saw him again. Maybe the cake got him.
"Temp played the guitar and sang folk songs. That was his hobby. He worked at the Census Bureau for quite a while AND THEN HE MADE IT BIG.
"Jeannette and he became friendly with Faith and Sydney Friedman. (no relation) Faith worked at the Library of Congress and encouraged Temp to record some of his folk songs for the Library. THAT led to bigger and much better things for the Temple family. At first he had to drive to Baltimore to a radio station for a 15 minute "gig". Then a big chain grocery store (Giant) gave him a very large contract to be their spokesperson and he was "off and running." He had a children's show 5 days a week with a cowboy theme. He played his folk songs, interviewed his guests, and had a gallery set-up where the children sat through the show. He was very good with the children-taught them good manners and "headed them in the right direction to do good things and mind their parents and be good to their brothers and sisters." He showed them cowboy movies and advertised Heidi Bread. "My favorite bread is Heidi and you'll like it too. It tastes so delicious and it's so good for you." I don't know if you ever knew of Goldie Hahn. She was very famous in TV and movies. She was one of the stars on "Laugh-In." She wrote him a "fan" letter when she was much younger. He got tons of fan mail, and he deserved it. His show was quite long (I think 1-1/2 hours.) When we visited Maryland, we took Frank and Charles with us. We also brought Penny-our little Chihuahua (Penelope Anne Weisel) with us one trip, and Temp had an idea to get her on the show. When all the children were seated in the Peanut Gallery, there was a loud lion's roar. And Penny came trotting across the stage. All the kids laughed and it ended up better than I thought. You couldn't always get Penny to follow directions. I don't remember if our boys were on that show or not. I believe they were.
"The Temple family moved to a BIG home (3 stories) right off of Rock Creek Park. It was a beautiful color of blue and I loved going to visit them. Faye was a teenager at the time and I had the "chore" of teaching her shorthand. She couldn't seem to get the hang of it. She really didn't need that skill. She went to the University of Arizona and graduated with a degree in archeology. She met Paul Long who was also in her field and they got married. She had a lovely wedding in a beautiful church in Washington. I was, again, a Matron of Honor. The reception was held at the Temple home and all was well.
"I wore a blue taffeta dress for that lovely wedding which was held in one of the big stately churches. The reception was at the Temple home on Old Spring Road in Bethesda.
"Those were happier times. When Temp's show was cancelled, he and Jeannette moved to Philadelphia. They didn't stay there long." Parents: Kulmann (Charles Kolman) FRIEDMAN-5 and Esther KAHN-6.

Either Pick or Jeannette altered their wedding records to show an earlier date, but NY marriage records put the date on 20 Feb 1937. Kulmann (Charles Kolman) FRIEDMAN12403,35407,35408 was born on 15 July 1882 in Siauliai (Shavel), Lithuania.12403,13529,35380,35381,35392,35395,35409 According to court records in Norfolk, Charles claimed to be 21 when he appeared before the Court on Saturday, 19 Mar 1898, for the purpose of applying to be admitted to become a citizen of the US. This would have him born in 1877, not 1879 as family lore indicates, and as he gave in 1900 census. [illegible entry for final word.] In June 1900 he was a street car conductor in Norfolk City, VA.35395 He lived 435 Church Street in Norfolk City, VA in 1904.35379 He and his future wife lived a block apart, and this is probably the basis for their having met. It's not clear just when he moved to Church Street, but he lived near the old Saint Vincent Hospital. On a date now lost, there was a fire at the hospital, and Charlie was one of the several people who rushed in and helped bring patients out, He was a real hero and was written up in the local paper. In April 1910 Kulmann was a jewelry salesman in Norfolk City, VA.13529 Enumerated three doors from his mother-in-law. He lived 413 1/2 Trade Street in Winston-Salem, Forsyth, NC in 1917. In January 1920 he was a manager of ladies furnishing in Winston-Salem, Forsyth, NC.35392 The enumerator's shorthand and handwriting makes the second world of "ladies fxxx" illegible. Kulmann lived 422 31st Street in Norfolk City, VA in 1922. Address found on back of a photograph of Jeannette Temple, age 9. In April 1930 he was a jewelry store manager in Washington, DC.35381 He lived 7701 Georgia Ave, NW in Washington, DC in 1943.35410 Kulmann lived in Silver Spring, Montgomery, MD after 1955.35411 After his wife's death, he moved in with his son Herbert and his family. He died on 21 September 1957 at the age of 75 in Hyattsville, Prince George's, MD.35412 Buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA. His daughter Dorothy remembered him this way in the Weisel-Friedman Genealogy:
"It's odd to realize that my father was old enough to be my grandfather. He was a very "dapper" man. Dressed like he was a millionaire, he had to have his suits made to order because he was short and stout. His posture was perfect and so were his manners.
"He was truly a 'gentleman.' Always kind and gentle with mother and me. We used to listen to the radio - Amos and Andy, One Man's Family, (Orson Welles and the War of the World) together and he would pat my head and keep me close. He and I were alike although I didn't know it at the time. He had an even disposition, but a very bad temper when he was "riled," My mother was just the opposite. She was sweet, kind and gentle. She was always busy with her handwork. I guess that was why they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. I never heard him call her anything but "Kid" although he was almost a year younger than she. We had a 50th anniversary party at (Dorothy sister's) Jeannette's house. The family was there and Aunt Clara was also invited because she was always a part of our family. I still regret that she died and nobody in her family let us know. That has been a sore spot on my mind for many years. I knew her since I was 10 years old, and she was so thrilled when Frank and I took Frankie to see her when he was just a baby.
"Dad managed a very busy jewelry store in Washington, and one story sticks in my mind now that I'm actually thinking about my life. He came home one night and couldn't eat his dinner. We knew something was wrong and he finally broke down and told us what had happened. Evidently when you manage a jewelry store everything must be accounted for before you lock the doors for the night. This night there was a diamond missing from one of the black velvet stone holders in the display counter. He paced, he cried, he blamed himself for being so careless and didn't sleep all night. First thing in the morning he was on the streetcar to go to work to find that diamond. This went on about 3 or 4 days when he had a standing appointment with the shoemaker who polished his shoes once a week. Guess what!!!! Diamond found embedded in the rubber heel of his shoe. I believe we went out for dinner that night.
"Dad was a real "softie" but he didn't want to let it show. One night I heard my mother crying and asked her why she was so sad. She said she had seen a beautiful caracal fur coat that she really wanted. When I went to work the next day, I called him with my newfound news. He brought the fur coat home that evening.
"Dad brought me all the latest novels from Landsburg's Department Store which is where he found a job selling furniture after the jewelry store closed. I don't think he realized that some of the novels were not appropriate for a girl of 11 or 12. I read "Forever Amber" when I was 11. I also read Anthony Adverse, Gone With the Wind and Anna Karenina. Today, I'm sure that would be very mild reading, but in my day it was sexy. Which, by the way, I didn't know a thing about-until MUCH later."
