He appeared in the census in 1830 in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank, NC.74167 Joseph appeared in the census in 1840 in Pasquotank Co., NC.74167 Enumerated with 1 male 40-50 (himself), 3 males 5-10 and 1 0-5, 1 female 30-40 (Dolly), 1 female 10-15 and one 0-5. In September 1850 he was a farmer in Pasquotank Co., NC.1620 In August 1860 he was a farmer in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank, NC.1618 Joseph died before May 1870 at the age of 71. He has reference number RLT # 92i.6027 I suspect that Joseph may have been married twice. The reason is that the 1820 census gives him two children who were born between 1810 and 1820 - and even if they were born at the later end of that range, there was a very large gap between them and the next child in 1831. Also, Dolly and he appear to be about the same age (16-26) in the 1820 census, but by 1840, Joseph is in the 40-50 range, while Dolly is only in the 30-40 range. She could be fudging, but she could be a second (younger) wife. Parents: Joseph TEMPLE-5242 and Lucy -5314.

Joseph TEMPLE Sr.74719 was born on 23 February 1801 in PA.9169 Birth date seems incorrect given marriage date of parents. He has reference number RLT # 30-5.4455 Temples in the Census identifies him as the son of Liston and Agnes (Elliott) Temple, but I think this may be an error. Liston died 6 years before Joseph was born. I think he may be the brother of Larkin Temples. It seems more likely, if a Liston Temple was his father, that it was Liston who married Harriett Robertson, who was born in VA, but lived in TN. Also, based only on timing and location, he may be related to Jeremiah Temple of Burke Co., NC and Wilson Co., TN.

From Danny Smith, "In 1912, this Joseph Temple was the eldest citizen in Richmond, Maine, and Elvira A. Webber, reporter to the Lewiston Journal, interviewed him. His account as related to the newspaper reporter appeared in that publication 26 October 1912.

"OLDEST TAX-PAYER IN RICHMOND: JOSEPH TEMPLE, WHO HAS JUST CELEBRATED HIS 88th BIRTHDAY, IS OF REVOLUTIONARY ANCESTRY

"Joseph Temple, whose photo taken this summer, accompanies this article, is probably the oldest tax-payer in the town of Richmond. Of this town he has been a resident many years, and the 23rd of the present October found him 88 summers young. He is hale, hearty and
merry, quick of motion, and still pliable of limb, as those who have driven by this autumn and found him in the top of his orchard trees gathering apples can testify. Mr. Temple's orchard has been his delight. He has made a business of caring for the trees and of grafting in different kinds of fruit specimens of which he exhibits with pride to chance callers.

"All his life he has been a worker, never idle a minute, and his smooth farm, no less than his orchard, give indications of this 'busy bee' existence. His right hand companion has been good health, and to such an extent that he is said never to have had a sick day or a
doctor in his life. This spring he made his garden, and the first of the harvesting season dug and put in his cellar 30 bushels of potatoes. Ten bushels of turnips followed, besides beets and other garden produce.

"Mr. Temple has worked for much of his life as a carpenter. He learned his trade of Robert George of Richmond, and many fine Richmond homes he built wholly or in part. He has also worked in various other places. The stairs in the old City Hall that recently burned in
Portland were built by him. He was married Sept. 3, 1857 in Roxbury by Rev. Thomas Anderson, and his wife was Kate V. Umberhind, the daughter of Deacon Umberhind of Richmond. Of their seven children, all but one were born in Richmond, that one in Bowdoin.

"Mr. Temple belongs to a long-lived family, and his ancestry hail from England. His father's name was Joseph, and his grandfather, Levi Temple, was of the seventh generation in a direct line from Abraham Temple of England, who according to a Temple genealogy, was the first Englishman that ever trod American soil.

His identification is uncertain. Joseph of death records, who d 1914, now identified as the Joseph b 1834, requires documentary proof. Of the 11 Josephs in OH in 1910, it is not clear which, if any, were he. He might be the Joseph b 1834 who was son of Joseph Taylor and Elizabeth (Cox) Temple based on rough timing and location. Of the 11 enumerated in 1910, he was the only one whose death date was unknown. It is possible that the Joseph who d 1914 was actually born after the 1910 census and was therefore an infant, but none were found thus far. Joseph TEMPLE33074 was born on 5 December 1843 in Sparta, Randolph, IL.447,44436,52897,84584,98723,102348 Birth year given as 1847 in the 1870 census. He appeared in the census in September 1850 in Randolph Co., IL.52898 He appeared in the census in June 1860 in Sparta, Randolph, IL.52897,76349 Joseph served in the military between 1861 and 1865.102349 Served in the Union Army all four years. Specific dates, ranks, units and locations unknown.
He may have been the Joseph Temple who was a private in Companies A and F, 10th Missouri US Infantry, from Sparta, IL. If so, this was later in the war when some units combined. The problem is that there appears to have been at least two Joseph Temples who were close in age in Sparta, Randolph, IL in 1870. The other was Joseph, husband of Margaret and father of William Eves (or Eno). There is no doubt about this Joseph's having been a Civil War veteran - the problem ismatching up what is known about his service. In July 1870 he was a farmer in Sparta, Randolph, IL.4812,98723 Possibly numerated twice, once as a farmer and once as a mail contractor. As a farmer, he was b 1844 and married Margaret E. The seond enumeration may be a different Joseph, b 1847, and he was a mail contractor. They were only 9 pages apart in the census. In June 1880 he was a farmer in Elkton, Washington, IL.4813 In June 1900 Joseph was a night watchman in Alton, Madison, IL.102348 In April 1910 he was a glass factory watchman in Alton, Madison, IL.44436 He lived 703 Washington Street in Alton, Madison, IL in May 1913.84584 Joseph died on 13 May 1913 at the age of 69 in Alton, Madison, IL.44434,84584 Died of pneumonia at home. Buried in Alton Cemetery, Alton, IL, Plot: Block 26 Lot 4, on 1 May. His parents were from IL (father) and Ireland (mother). Cemetery records make his dates a bit confusing, in that there were two Joseph Temples buried in the same plot, one who died in late April 1913, the other who died in Jun 1879. Clearly the one who died in Jun 1879 was not the husband of Ida Joesting. However, given their relative ages, and the late age of Joseph when he married Ida in 1902, it seems possible that Joseph had an earlier wife, and may have been the father of Joseph who died in 1879. So, based on all the people buried in the same lot, and given their dates of death, this family has been reconstructed. Marriage to Lulu and the association of the younger Joseph with her requires proof beyond being buried together. The marriage to Margaret E. is confirmed in the census. Parents: David TEMPLE-26041 and Sarah Ann (Sarah) MC CLURE-26073.

Spouse: Margaret E. -26107. Margaret E. and Joseph TEMPLE were married before 1870. Children were: William F. EAVES-74453, Joseph TEMPLE-82501, TEMPLE-82502, TEMPLE-82503, Lulu TEMPLE-82504.

Joseph TEMPLE was born in 1844.102350 In 1879 he was a laborer in Garafraxa West, Wellington, Ontario, Canada.102350 He died on 1 October 1879 at the age of 35 in Garafraxa West, Wellington, Ontario, Canada.102350 Died of injuries to spine and kidneys.

Joseph TEMPLE was born on 22 September 1844 in Campbellford, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada.4499,102351 Her marriage records gave Campbellford, but other sources place it in Grafton, ON. Find-A-Grave puts the date on 17 Sep which is the calculated date from his age at death of 36y1m5d. However, that age is also predicated on his grave marker's death date read as 22 Oct, but that date disagrees with death records. In 1871 he was a cooper in Seymour, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada.102352 In 1880 he was a carpenter in Bruce Co., Ontario, Canada.102353 Joseph died on 27 October 1880 at the age of 36 in Amabel and Saugeen, Bruce, Ontario, Canada.102351,102353 Death records and his gravestone give 1880, but other sources place the date in 1882. Died of consumption. Buried in Allenford United Church Cemetery, Allenford, ON. Find-A-Grave calls this "Old Methodist Cemetery." Parents: John TEMPLE-78856 and Maria (Mary) JOHNSTON-78857.
