James TEMPLE died in February 1925 in Uniontown, Bourbon, KS.42649 He might not be a Temple - there was a James Templin in Iola, KS, in 1920, who might be confused for James Temple. Also, it may be that they were simply reporting his former presence in the county, if he was James Burt Temple later of Fresno, CA.

James TEMPLE Sr.42653 was born before 1750 in Pasquotank Co., NC.42653 He appeared in the census between 1784 and 1787 in NC.42654 Enumerated in "District No. 6" with 2 males 21-60, 2 females of all ages, 1 black slave 12-50, and 4 black slaves under 12 or over 50. He appeared in the census in 1790 in Pasquotank Co., NC.42655 Enumerated with 1 male over 16, 1 under 16 and 2 females, indicating a possibly unknown daughter. James appeared in the census in 1800 in Pasquotank Co., NC.42655 Enumerated with 1 male 45 or older (himself), 1 age 10-16, and 2 0-10, with 1 female 26-45, and 2 females 0-10. He appeared in the census in 1810 in Pasquotank Co., NC.42655 He appeared in the census in 1820 in Pasquotank Co., NC.42655 James died about 1830.42653 At one time, I had linked this James as the husband of Rachel Baily/Baly. It may still be correct, but there is also strong evidence that another James, born about the same time but to Frederick Temple, was the husband of Rachel.

I have also found evidence that Brittain/Britton Temple, enumerated in the 1810 census of Pasquotank, was on the same page as James Sr. From other sources, notably a genealogy of the Forehand family, I found that Britton's mother was the daughter of Lemuel Forehand, and thus have added both the wife's surname and Britton as another son of James Sr.

To go even further out on the limb, I suspect that Angelico Temple, a female also listed on the same page in the 1810 census as James Sr., is in fact his wife. Angelico was enumerated as over 45, and thus would be the right age. So, she could have been Angelico Forehand. However, she could equally have been related to Robert Temple. Parents: Colonel Joseph TEMPLE-4448 and Mary (Molly) HILL-4519.

Spouse: Angelica\Angelico FOREHAND-35168. Children were: Britton TEMPLE-35170, James TEMPLE Jr.-5249, John Calvin TEMPLE-5250.

James TEMPLE was born about 1755 in Prince George Co., VA. He was elected as State Delegate in 1798/9 in New Kent Co., VA.42656 He died about 1820. Parents: David TEMPLE-9837 and ROPER-9848.

James TEMPLE42658 was born on 20 September 1766 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.12087,42658,42659 Rise of the Temples gives year as 1776. About 1800 he was a lawyer. Graduated in 1794 from Dartmouth College. He taught grammar school in Concord in 1795-1796, and then studied law with Jonathan Fay of Concord. He then opened an office at Cambridge. Captain James TEMPLE13859 was born in 1772 in Mecklenburg Co., NC.9796,13859 He served in the military between 1799 and 1801 in Washington Co., TN.42661 Initially commissioned as a Cornet in the Washington District Cavalry Regiment on 24 Jun 1799, he was advanced to Captain on 27 Jan 1801. Between 1814 and 1822 he was a Surveyor.13860 James died between 1820 and 1822 in Memphis, Shelby, TN.13859,13860 Died of malaria while on a surveying trip. He was a Farmer in Greeneville, Greene, TN.9796,13859,13860 Parents: Major TEMPLE-4486 and Mary Jane KENNEDY-4488.

James TEMPLE42662 was born about 1774 in Pasquotank Co., NC.42662 He appeared in the census in 1800 in Pasquotank Co., NC.30577 He is given as a male over 45, so I am concerned about this identification and his assumed birth date. He died about 1829. Not enumerated in the 1810 census. It is possible he is the James who fought in the Revolution on the side of the colonists and later married Rachel, a nurse. If so, Rachel is known by the following: 1 January-31 August 1782: A Rachel Temple, Nurse, is continually shown on pay abstracts for Refugee Hospital, Charleston, South Carolina (same, pages 534/535). No apparent relation to Thomas or James Temple from NC. (A Rachel Temple was married to a James Temple from SC who served in the Revolutionary War on the side of the colonist. This James died in SC 6 Sept 1829 and is not the James Temple from NC. Ref: Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files). Parents: Joseph TEMPLE-4521 and Sarah SNOWDEN-26188.

James TEMPLE42663 was born about 1774 in Pasquotank Co., NC.27886 Range derived from the 1786 census of Pasquotank County and the 1790 federal census. The dates, however, come from Temple People vol. II, and appear way too late for his service in the Revolution. He served in the military in 1781/2. Served as a private in Colonel John Phillips' Regiment, Jackson's Creek Militia, Camden District, SC. In Captain George Platt's company. Served 61 days from 1 Jun to 31 Jul 1781. Found by Ralph Berlyn Temple in the New Bern Library "Loyalists in the Southern Campaign, Volume I, page 163. He also appeared during the same period in Lt Col Zachariah Gibbs' Regiment, Spartan Militia (on page 282 of the same reference).

Petition for James Temple to receive back pay reveals much information about his war service and is copied here (same, page 144):

Nr __, Memorial of James Temple of Camden District, Colonel Ballentine's Regiment.
To Lieut Colonel Nisbet Balfour, Esquire, commanding his Majesty's 23rd Regiment, Royal Witch Fusileers and Commandant of Charleston, South Carolina.
Petitioner served with the British Troops from the return of British Government until he entered into the militia under Colonel Ballentine's command and received only two-months pay. He was one of the number that were taken and wounded near Ashley Ferry, and sent on command of General Gold's orders. His wounds rendered him incapable of duty from that time onward. He performed the duty of a sergeant from 1 September till he was wounded in November. Signed by James Temple.
Petitioner was one of Captain Hector McNeill's men in North Carolina who made his escape to Camden and joined the British. When he left North Carolina, he went to Georgia where he stayed until February 1781 then he came to Camden and joined Captain Hugh's Company of Militia, and received pay for the time he served in that company, which he left in the beginning of June last. He joined the militia at Monk's Corner a few days before the action at the Eutaws (8 September 1781) and lost the use of his arm by a wound he received last November. Colonel Ballentine, who has endorsed the petition, should recollect that he already paid the men in this company. Petitioner has been loyal and his home lost on account of his service. He has also lost the use of his arm. Signed by Robert Gray and William Ballentine.
(PRO T50, Vol 5)

He appears again in Dec 1782 as James Temple of NC, listed in the Refugee Pay Abastract, Third Class, in Charleston, SC (same reference as above, pages 504-505). He appeared in the census between 1784 and 1787 in Pasquotank Co., NC.42664 Enumerated near his father with 2 males 21-60, and 2 females. Also, 1 black 12-50, and 4 below 12 or above 50. James received the "Old Plantation" in his father's will in 1791 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1815 This was part of the land originally purchased by his father from William Nichols in 1768. He sold land to his brother Thomas on 18 August 1798 in Carteret Co., NC.1815 He lived in Carteret Co., NC about 1800.1815 James died in October 1836 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1815,30577 Will dated 15 Oct 1836, probated in the court's March Term, 1837. He was named after his grandfather, James Mc Daniel.. Probably the James mentioned in the will of James Mc Daniel in 1780 as his grandson, and an executor of the will. Rise of the Temples identifies the son of Joseph and Sarah (Snowden) Temple as the James who married Miriam Smith. This is probably not correct, as that other James was probably the one who fought on the colonist's side in the Revolution, while this James was a loyalist (along with his father and brother). Parents: Thomas TEMPLE-4457 and Luraney (Fannie) MC DANIEL-4503.

Spouse: Miriam SMITH-26189. Miriam SMITH and James TEMPLE were married on 29 April 1791 in Pasquotank Co., NC.11842,21639 Ralph Berlyn Temple found this in the Pasquotank County Marriage Records 1767-1868. Children were: Gilico TEMPLE-5318, Rhoda TEMPLE-5319, Lodwick TEMPLE-5320.

James TEMPLE42667,42668 was born about 1793. I think he is closely related to or the son of George and Mary (Lee) Temple. I think he had a daughter named Catherine, who married James R. Clements. I also suspect he had another son, who was the father of James M. Temple, b 1832.

The Biographical Encyclopedia of the State of Delaware says that Governor Temple of DE was of the same line as one James D.W. Temple. That seems to indicate this James was the son of George Temple, as portrayed here. This association is very soft, and requires proof. Parents: Joshua TEMPLE-27470 and Ann WILSON-27471.

Spouse: Anne KINLEY-47337. Children were: Governor William TEMPLE-47323, Emory TEMPLE-47317.

James TEMPLE was born in 1793 in KY.7094 The handwriting was illegible in 1860, and his age seems to be 67, but could easily be 47. In July 1860 he was a cord in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA.7094 He died. The handwriting was illegible in 1860, and his name appears to be given either as Jas or Jos.

Spouse: Susan -89652. Susan and James TEMPLE were married before 1860. Children were: Mary E. TEMPLE-89653, Ellen TEMPLE-89654.

James TEMPLE14413,32519 was born on 10 May 1793 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.14413,42669 He died on 18 December 1806 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.14413,32519,42670 Buried in Old Hill Burying Ground, Concord, MA. Parents: Peter TEMPLE-852 and Lois DARBY-927.

James TEMPLE was born in 1793 in PA.14404,14405,36560 In 1850 and 1860, he claimed PA, but in 1880, his son gave MD for his birthplace. PA is consistent with his service in 1812. According to his gravestone, he was 71, which differs slightly from the census. He served in the military in 1812.42671 Served in Captain Valentine Giesey's Light Infantry Company of PA. In October 1850 he was a farmer in Madison Twp., Richland, OH.14405 In June 1860 James was a farmer in Truro, Knox, IL.14404 He died on 3 May 1862 in Truro, Knox, IL.4400,42671 Buried in Fink Cemetery, Truro, IL. Information from Helen (Arnold) Barber, <hibarber@cts.com>, said "Up until about 1994, James Temple's stone was buried in 3 pieces. The stone also indicates that he was a soldier in the 1812 war which I have verification from the National Archives that this James Temple was a private with Captain Valentine Giesey's Light Infantry Co. of PA."

Burial in the Fink Cemetery implies some kind of family affinity, but it is not clear what that might be. James and his daughter-in-law were both buried in the cemetery, but the link to the Finks is not at all clear. The other people buried in the cemetery are the four children of Jacob and Susanna Fink. He has reference number RLT # U1584.42672 No reference number assigned in 1850. This is a curious family in 1860. Living with them is a Malinda Hall, who might be the same person who married William Weatherman after he divorced Martha Ann Temple. Also living with the family is a William Temple, age 7, born in IL, but whose parents are not obvious. Also in the household is a William and Jane Lemmon. Jane was also born in PA in 1840. An eclectic group that needs some sorting out.

Spouse: Tracy DANIELS-31317. Tracy DANIELS and James TEMPLE were married before 1829. Children were: Matilda TEMPLE-31389, Margaret TEMPLE-43030, Simeon TEMPLE-31388, John C. TEMPLE-31384, Harrison TEMPLE-31318, James TEMPLE-31319, Mary Jane (Jane) TEMPLE-47014, William TEMPLE-47017.

Spouse: UNKNOWN-88864. UNKNOWN and James TEMPLE were married before 1848. Children were: John W. TEMPLE-88865.

James TEMPLE7887,7894,42673 was born about 1795. Date is a placeholder only. He purchaser of land on 11 February 1818 in Limestone Co., AL.7887 Pat Dowdey cited the following background for James' timing in Limestone County:

Robert Dunnavant, Jr., in Historic Limestone County, Vol. I. A Collection of Stories and, Incidentally, Some History from Limestone County, Alabama, and Surrounding Counties. Athens, AL: Pea Ridge Press, 1993, states that Limestone County traces its roots to the William and James Sims settlement. "They came down the river in rude flatboats from Roane County, Tennessee, turning right at the mouth of Elk River and picking their way upstream into the Elk River Valley in 1806" (p. 4). Other members of the first group included "William Penn Redus of Pennsylvania, a blacksmith; Thomas Redus, his son; James Witty, John Maples, Benjamin Murrell and Robert Pridemore" (p. 5). Four other families arrived from Hawkins County, Tennessee, in the spring of 1807: Thomas Dodd, Simon Foy, Thomas Kyle and James Ford. Samuel Robertson established a trading post in 1808, which soldiers from Fort Hampton forced him to give up to William Wilder, whom he then killed in a fight. Sims settlement began to draw people from "the Cumberland settlements in middle Tennessee and from Kentucky and North and South Carolina" (p. 6). Over the next years, until March 26, 1816, the military tried, often unsuccessfully, to keep the settlers off of Chickasaw land west of a designated boundary line "from present-day Hobbs Island into middle Tennessee" (p. 4). Elk County, which became Limestone and Lauderdale Counties, was created on May 8, 1817, "bounded on the north by the Tennessee state line, on the west and south by the Tennessee River, and on the east by Madison County" (p. 9). Limestone County was formally created on 6 Feb 1818; and "government land offices at Huntsville began selling property within the new county, February 2, 1818, at from $2 to $50 per acre, according to Bob Walker's Limestone County History" (p. 10).

On 11 Feb 1818, James TEMPLE acquired land from the U.S. Government in Limestone Co., AL-1 South, Range 5 West, Huntsville Meridian, Part of Section - Southwest ¼, Section 23, Acres 159.92, grantor United States, Plat Book, John Porter 1818, Number of Certificate or Warrant 2470. He appeared in the census in 1820 in Limestone Co., AL.6085,7887 Enumerated with 1 white male over 21, 1 white male under 21, 1 white female over 21, and 1 white female under 21. James an appraiser of the estate of Henry Lusby, relationship unknown in March 1822 in Limestone Co., AL.7887,42674 The other appraisers were with Uriah Smith and William Willis. He security for Josiah Davidson who died intestate on 25 November 1825 in Limestone Co., AL.7887,42675 He appeared in the census in 1830 in Limestone Co., AL.42676 Enumerated with 3 sons all born between 1825 and 1830, as well as his wife 20-30 years old and one girl born between 1815 and 1820, and another between 1820 and 1825. James security for Elizabeth Sims who died intestate before 1831 in Limestone Co., AL.7887,42677 Simon Foy was the administrator, with James Temple and Thomas Hardiman were security for the estate. He acquirer of land in 1831 in Jackson Co., MO.7887 Pat Dowdey's research found "According to Mrs. John Vineyard's book, Original Land Entries of Jackson County, Missouri, James TEMPLE acquired land in Range 31, Township 50, Section 26, Jackson County, MO, on 28 Apr 1831 (WILLIAMS, Jediah) (p. 27). On the following dates, he acquired other land in Jackson Co., MO, Range 31, Township 50, Section 25 on 21 Jul 1831 and Range 31, Township 50, Section 26, on 9 Aug 1831 (John Vineyard, Original Land Entries of Jackson County, Missouri. (1971). In Mrs. Woodruff's book, Missouri Miscellany, James TEMPLE of Jackson County, MO, on 20 Mar 1832 obtained the following: TEMPLE, James, Jackson County, MO, 20 Mar 1832 William STRICKLAND and Catherine, his wife, to James TEMPLE, sum of 80.00, 80 acres, W1/2 of SWQ of Sec 25, TWP 50R31. AC80 Rec. 1 June 1832 (48); and TEMPLE, James, Range 31, Township 50, Section 36, 4 Apr. 1839 (p. 28)." He in 1831 in Jackson Co., MO.7887,42678 In addition to the land he acquired in 1818, he also had land in Township 1, South Range, 5 West, Section 26, E ½ of NW ¼, 80.20 acres, River Imp., 28 Apr 1830 (Margaret Matthews Coward, Old Land Records of Limestone County, ALA. Huntsville, AL, Margaret Matthews Coward, 1984, pp. 142-143). On 10 Jan 1831 (filed 30 Apr. 1831, Deed Book 4, Pg. 65, Limestone Co. Land Abstract. Township 1 Range 3, 4, 5, 6. Limestone County Dept. of Archives & History. Limestone County Commission. Abstract of Title to Section on No. 23 Township 1 South Range 5 West), he sold the land to Samuel Walker, with Nancy being named in the deed. His first recorded date in Jackson County was 28 Apr 1831, which seems to narrow his move to the latter part of winter that year. James an overseer of roads in 1832/3 in Jackson Co., MO.7887 "In the Jackson County, MO, Court Minutes Book 1 1827-1833 with Index and Jackson Co., MO Death Register 1883-1891, compiled by Joanne C. and O.B. Eakin, 1988, Independence, MO, is the following reference to James TEMPLE (pp. 155-56):

"Court Minutes of 30 March 1832

"TEMPLE, James - The court appoints James TEMPLE overseer of the road division No. six, commencing at the middle of the Channel of Little Blue Creek at the lower Baxters ford and from thence to where it intersects the old Lixington road near the big hill on fire prairie, and order that said TEMPLE be served with a copy of this order."

A little later:

"5 Aug 1833 80.86

"The court appoints James TEMPLE overseer of the road district commencing at the side of the long branch and from thence to little Blue Creek, and order that he be served with a copy of this order."
He died in 1839 in Jackson Co., MO.7894,42679,42680 Research by Pat Dowdey, <dwd139@verizon.net>, indicated "JAMES TEMPLE died intestate before 1840; and according to a document, dated 29 June 1842, (EE-163; see Victor P. Meador, Jackson County, MO Wills and Administrations 1828-1862, Independence, MO, p. 24), James TEMPLE's heirs were Nancy TEMPLE, and 5 children, Jane Adams (form. Jane TEMPLE) and Merbilla, William Augustine, John Smith, and Albert Adison. The correct name for Merbilla is Myrtilla; and the middle name for William was variously written Augustine, Augustain, or Gastain." She further explained that "the last dated record was 4 Apr 1839. He does not appear on the 1840 Jackson Co., MO, census with Nancy TEMPLE and the children." which narrows his death to between Apr 1839 and the time of the 1840 census.

Pat Dowdey also found "According to a document, dated 29 June 1842 (EE-163; see Victor P. Meador, Jackson County, MO Wills and Administrations 1828-1862. Independence, MO, p. 24), "Jedediah Williams makes bond of $5000, sec. by Stewart Lewis and James Franklin, to admin. above estate. Signed by all three. That dec'd left as heirs his widow Nancy TEMPLE, and 5 children Jane ADAMS (form. Jane TEMPLE) and Merbilla [sic], William Augustine, John Smith, and Albert Adison TEMPLE."

The heirs later petitioned to have the estate divided and sold. He has reference number RLT # U3383.5048 Work from multiple sources firmly refutes the idea that James was the James M.B. Temple enumerated in 1840 in Limestone Co., AL. Aside from the timing problems they were born in different years, and may have been cousins, but that requires proof.

Work by Pat Dowdey, dwd139@verizon.net, shows that this James is not James M. B. TEMPLE, husband of Martha, who appeared in Limestone Co., AL, on the 1840 and 1850 censuses. On the 1850 census, he was 58 years old, p.b. VA. Also, other multiple sources firmly refute the idea that James was the James M. B. TEMPLE enumerated on the 1840 and 1850 censuses in Limestone Co., AL. They may have been cousins, but that requires proof.

There may be a hint of a connection for James in Prince George County, VA. The unusual name of his son, William Augustus, may be a key. He was also known as Gastain and similar variations, and this may link him to the line of Burwell Temple of Bristol Parish, Prince George, VA.
