Linda Wade and her mother, Ethel Temple Jensen, did considerable research on this family, and traced the origin of some genealogies' assertion that the wife of Thomas Temple was Sarah Wright. Her surname is unknown, and the claim that it was Wright comes from the 1940 Ohio Temple family reunion. At that reunion, Wilbur Temple gave a "history of the Temple family." In that, he gave her surname as Wright, and that she was his first wife and mother of Joseph. The source of his data was said to be a family Bible. This remains an unprovable assertion, except for the family Bible, and that may have been filled in based on the publication of Levi Temple's "Some Temple Pedigrees," in which a Sarah Wright did indeed marry a Thomas Temple, but they were from MA and NH.

Research by Sylvia Temple Hartmann indicated that Lucretia (Lucy) Butler married Stephen Temple in Winchester, NH in abt 1762, although the date is uncertain. Lucretia's father was one of two brothers who settled in Boston and built several blocks of that city. This is some kind of confusion, it seems, because the Winchester birth records clearly indicate that the wife of Stephen of Winchester, and the mother to the children shown here, was named Sarah. Research by Ralph L. Temple has not turned up solid dates for Sarah, but her existence cannot be doubted. I show her as Sarah because of the clerk's records of births in Winchester, and would really like to figure out the confusion between Sarah and Lucretia Butler.
