He served as a 2nd Lieutenant, appearing in the muster roll of Captain David E. Burntrager's Company B, of the Second Regiment of Washington Territory Volunteers, Army of the United States, on 23 Jan 1856 for a term of 6 months. He appeared again as a 4th Corporal on the muster roll of Captain Gilmore Hays' Company B, of the First Regiment of Washington Territory Volunteers, Army of the United States. He enlisted for 3 months' service on 14 Oct 1856.

A miscellaneous record indicates that he received scrip # 1516 in the amount of $ 25, but the date in the transcription is very misleading, as it said that was 29 Nov 1801, which predated Lewis and Clark. More likely, the date was 1891, and was a typo.

His widow later applied for a pension on the basis of his wartime service.
