William TEMPLE was born about 1770 in Carteret Co., NC.¹⁸¹⁵ He managed the farm of John Koen between 1777 and 1780 in Pasquotank Co., NC.¹⁸¹⁵ William managed the plantation of John Koen when the latter fought under Gen. Washington in the Revolution. When Koen returned, he married William's sister, Susannah. He lived in Beaufort, Carteret, NC in 1784.¹⁸¹⁵ William lived in Charleston, Charleston, SC in 1790.¹⁸¹⁵ He lived in Carteret Co., NC about 1791.¹⁸¹⁵ Returned to Carteret Co. after the death of his father. He purchased land in 1793 in Carteret Co., NC.¹⁸¹⁵ Deed dated 1 November 1793 revealed that William purchased the one-half share (28 acres) of Thomas' (son) for 50 pounds. This deed further stated that the land had been received by William and Thomas from "Thomas Temple, our father" . . . "by heirship", (deed also states that Thomas (father) received the land from Jonathan Hibbs and land patent was originally part of land patent for 100 acres dated 20 April 1741). The deed was signed by Thomas (son) and Nancy (wife) Temple, witnessed by Calos Longest and Thomas Bareat. William involved in land transaction in 1794 in Carteret Co., NC.¹⁸¹⁵ Deed dated 19 November 1794 indicates that William and Thomas (son) Temple sold a parcel of land received from father Thomas Temple to Ananias Nelson for $80.00. The parcel was described as 200 acres lying in Carteret County between Bogue Sound and Newport River on the side of __ Branch abutting Benjamin Oglesby's land. He appeared in the census in 1800 in Carteret Co., NC.¹⁸¹⁵ William Temple, son of Thomas, was head of one household and was listed as being 26 to 45 years old. The household also had a female 26 to 45 years old (probably wife), a male child less than 10 years old, and a female child less than 10 years old. (William Temple is mentioned in the county records as a witness to the will of Johnathan Hibbs on 3 December 1799, as witness to Benjamin/Joseph Oglesby deed November 1800, and appointed by court to partition land on Gales Creek 6 December 1810. Also mentioned in the "North Carolina Gazette" of New Bern on 15 July 1784 as having a letter in the New Bern Post Office and being a resident of Beaufort. It is possible that this William Temple could have been a seafaring man as mentioned in the Oglesby's story. Records of Barbados (island in the West Indies) reveal that a William Temple was born to a Mr. Temple 27 September 1791. Barbados records also indicate that an Elizabeth Ann daughter of Joseph and Ann Temple was baptized 14 April 1781, son James was baptized 26 April 1788. He appeared in the census in 1810 in Camden Co., NC.⁴¹⁰⁷⁴ Enumerated with 1 male 26-45 (himself), 1 male 10-16, 1 0-10; 1 female 26-45, 1 0-10. William died in 1816 in NC. His 1816 will mentions Dorcas as his loving wife, to whom he left all his land, stock and cattle to raise their children, William and Daniel. Probably the youngest son of Thomas. It is not known whether the sons listed are by Dorcas or an unknown prior marriage. Parents: Thomas TEMPLE-4457 and Luraney (Fannie) MC DANIEL-4503.

Spouse: Dorcas OGLESBY-42069. Dorcas OGLESBY and William TEMPLE were married between 1800 and 1810. Dorcas married William Temple ( her stepson ), between 1800-1810. Fate of William's first wife and children listed in the 1800 census is discussed below under paragraph "William and Sarah". Dorcas is described in William's 1816 will as his loving wife, and he left to her all his land, stock and cattle to raise his children, William (born 1803) and Daniel. (It is unknown if these children were by Dorcas or previous wife.) The 1810 Census listed William as 26 to 45 years old so he apparently died young. I think it is unlikely he is the William Temple who is buried in Old Bethel Cemetery, Sparta, IL, because that man's birth date was 10 Sep 1787. That would make the one buried in Sparta, IL, William, son of John and Elizabeth (Marshall) Temple. Parents: John TEMPLE-4489 and Jane RUSSELL-21668.

An 1894 biography (Encyclopedia of Delaware County [PA] - Wileyin) of grandson James H. Temple (your#9295) (eldest son of William & Mary Temple's son Abraham Y. Temple [your#7588]) says: "William Temple, paternal grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was a native of New Jersey, and the eldest of a family of four sons, the others being Andrew, Azariah, and Levi. William Temple married Mary McGowen and was the father of seven children; John C., Abner, Abram (father), Jane, Mary, and two who died in infancy. He lived to be fifty-nine years of age, dying about 1858, and his wife died at the age of sixty-eight."

William sold land in Moreland Twp; Lycoming Co PA 26 May 1832 to John Shipman of Muncy Creek (Lyc.Co........Deeds 19:262). In this deed William and wife Mary Magdelena,of Penn Twp. sold 43 acres of land for $280.00. This same piece of land was conveyed to William Temple from Mary Doctor on 10 May 1831. Mary Doctor received a Land Warrant (#18) on 25 Mar 1816 which was accepted May 1816 (PA Hist.& Museum Commission, Harrisburg). The Patent (Book #H23-109) bearing the date of 7 Feb 1825, containing 175 acres. (Note: is this William's wife or mother-in-law?)

Noyes reported that he was a blacksmith by occupation, but of a stirring and inquisitive mind. He lived in Boscawen, N. H., from 1819 to 1865; since that time in East Woburn, Mass. He was a deacon in the church at Boscawen from 1858 to 1865. Although not listed as black in the earlier censuses, they are so listed (apparently) in 1860.
