William TEMPLE13861 was born in 1649 in Potterne, England.9794 The Compendium of American Genealogy says he was from Coombs Lane, Wiltshire, England, but other sources seem to disagree. The Compendium is not all that reliable, so I have shown the date and place from the GEN UKI site, provided by Gail Temple, <GLRT1947@aol.com>. He died on 22 August 1702. His son William mentioned that he had a second wife (unnamed). This was the cause of the younger William's leaving England. Research by Gail Temple, <GLRT1947@aol.com>, has not indicated that the second wife existed, or if she did, that she was legal.

Spouse: Susanna CARRINGTON-16485. Susanna CARRINGTON and William TEMPLE were married on 14 September 1680 in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, England. Children were: Susannah TEMPLE-21454, William TEMPLE-4525, Thomas TEMPLE-4482, Abigail TEMPLE-49480.

William TEMPLE was born about 1662 in Surry Co., VA.1814 He received 191 acres of land from Phillip Ludwell on 1 January 1694 in Albemarle, Pasquotank, NC.1814,1815 Research by Ralph Berlyn Temple places the date of the first grant on 1 Feb 1694, with a subsequent grant of 150 acres on 1 Aug 1694. Both were in the Albemarle area. He recipient of a survey warrant on 2 August 1694 in Albemarle, Pasquotank, NC.1815 He received a survey warrant for bringing 13 "peons" to Albemarle from the Secretary's Office of the Lord Proprietors. Of the 13 settlers listed, we find Robert and his wife Elizabeth, and William and his wife Elizabeth. William appraised estate of Elizabeth Reed on 29 November 1694 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1814,1815 Her name is also given as Elizabeth Roads. William Temple, along with Austin Scarborough, Thomas Cartwright and Richard Madren were appointed to appraise the estate of Elizabeth Reed on behalf of her nearest relatives, Thomas and William Relfe. At the time, this area, known as "Souther Plantation," was in Virginia, but later became Pasquotank County, NC. I suspect it is possible that she was the mother-in-law of William. He died in 1696 in Pasquotank Co., NC.1814 Died intestate. His heirs included his parents, Robert and Elizabeth. Parents: Robert TEMPLE-35066 and Elizabeth -35067.

Spouse: Elizabeth -47629. Elizabeth and William TEMPLE were married before 1694.

William TEMPLE5417,8936 was born on 6 June 1662 in Hutton Bushell, Yorkshire, England. He immigrated on 12 December 1678.51974 A prisoner in Edinburgh Tolbooth, he was transported from Leith to the plantations aboard the St. Michael of Scarborough. He lived in Charles City, Charles, VA in 1687.31490,51975 The earliest record for William was a suit filed 3 Feb 1687 in which he was the plaintiff. In the 1690s, William Temple, along with Samuel Tatum (his father in law) and Richard Ligon received a patent for 1022 acres of land in what is known as Warwick Swamp in Bristol Parish. He was still a resident when he registered a distinctive mark for his livestock in April 1693. William in receipt of a patent of land on the Appomatox River on 24 April 1703 in Warwick Swamp, Charles, VA.31490 Received 627 acres for transporting 13 settlers. He sold land to his son Thomas out of his own tract on 7 September 1724 in Bristol Parish, Prince George, VA.2728 He died after 31 October 1726 in Prince George Co., VA.2728 On this date, he was mentioned in a land deal involving Jacob Deerheart. Although the numerous children given here for William and Rebecca are probably correct, only Samuel, Thomas, William and John are proved. The following daughters have strong evidence: Ann, Mary, and Rebecca. Parents: William Guilielmus TEMPLE-24271 and Elizabeth WOAD-24272.

Spouse: Rebecca TATUM-9824. Rebecca TATUM and William TEMPLE were married about 1685 in Charles City, Charles, VA.31490,31491 No record of the marriage has been found. William TEMPLE7729,21309 was born about 1685 in Bradford-on-Avon, Wiltshire, England.4458,21309,31528 Rise of the Temples gives 1690, but this does not agree with baptism records. Also, the place is alternatively given as Coombs Lane, Wiltshire. He was baptized on 24 January 1686 in Wiltshire, England.7512 Baptized in Atworth Parish. He immigrated on 21 March 1713 to Chester Co., PA.7512,21309 Emigrated from Malmesbury. William died in 1775 in Kennett, Chester, PA.4458,21309,31528,51976 Will dated 10 Jun 1769, proved 9 May 1775. The following was provided by Joanne May:

Respected Niece Mary Isaac:
On the 23rd of Nov. 1772 with great satisfaction & pleasure rec'd thy kind letter dated Bath 18th of Aug, 1772, & was greatly rejoiced to hear from one that was the offspring of my sister Susannah for whom though young when I left her, had a particular regard & esteem for, being my favorite sister as I well remember the younger children laboured under some hardships & difficulties by our fathers marrying a second wife, which is often the case in second marriages, & that was the cause of my leaving my native land, but through the blessing of Almighty God & my care & industry I have acquired a handsome share of the things necessary to be enjoyed in this life, besides which I've had nine children, 4 whereof are now living (to wit) 2 sons & 2 daughters all married & have a competent living, my son Thomas is the oldest, Hannah, Lydia and Benjamin are the others living, and those Dec'd are Susanna, William, Elizabeth, Sarah & Alice, thy uncle Thomas is alive & hath 5 children (viz) 4 sons & one daughter all married but the youngest son. I must inform you although strangers, whom I and my brother married, (viz) I married one of the family of Taylors who came from Didcot not far from Reading in Berkshire, my brother Thomas married one of the family of Jefferys from Wiltshire some of which family when my son Thomas was in your kingdom was living at Mumsham (indistinct) & Whitley common (viz) Robert Jefferys at the former & Edward & Thomas at the latter. I am well pleased to hear of thy industry & care over thy family which appeareth as thou hast taken the advice of the wise king Solomon (go to the ant thou sluggard consider her ways and be wise) and although thou cant boast of much gain yet if thou hast food and raiment sufficient learn therewith to be content for when our days come to a period we can take nothing with us, remember how it is with the poor man and the rich in the parable, and a common Proverb now in these days, honesty is the best policy. I have given thy respects to thy uncle Thomas, they are all well and desires to be kindly remembered to thee and thine, as for my ever seeing the land of my nativity I much despair of, being far advanced in years and the infirmities attending old age makes if difficult crossing the seas. I earnestly request if an opportunity should offer that thee make search for the day and year that I was born in. I suppose it may be found in the records of births for the parish of Atford alias Atworth in Wilts as I remember my parents saying I was born at Coonslane in said parish (my fathers name was William Temple) and send me an acct on a pieced of paper with the parsons hand to it in thy next letter which will be acknowledged as a particular favour both from him and thee, with due respects I conclude and am thy ever loving
uncle William Temple

William TEMPLE1829,3008 was born on 15 August 1704 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.3008,51977,51978 Essex Institute cites Perry's Scotch Irish, p. 14, which indicates William came to America from Ireland before 1729. It is not clear where the confusion comes in, but this is clearly the same William cited in the Essex Institute article (all the children and the spouse match exactly, as do the dates). He lived 158 Holden Street in Worcester, Worcester, MA between 1729 and 1745. He died on 20 February 1795 in Alstead, Cheshire, NH.3008 Rise of the Temples indicates death place as Winchester, NH. William was a Carpenter.3008 He was a Housewright. Reported moved to Vernon, VT and to Winchester, NH. Perry's Scotch-Irish, p. 14, indicates he or his line came from Ireland before 1729.
