The latter Richard is the one who actually married Ruth Gardner, and died in Los Angeles in 1961. Furthermore, the children shown for Richard Sheldon are actually the children of his son, Richard.

Rise of the Temples gives a marriage to Ruth Gardner, and I think she married his son, Richard S.
