He appeared in the census in 1870 in Washington, Bradley, AR.²⁸⁵⁷⁸ In June 1880 he was a farmer in Moro, Bradley, AR.¹³⁵¹⁷ James died on 29 October 1895 in Reese, Cherokee, TX.^{13519,13520,43840} His widow's pension application said he died in Cherokee County, but some records put him near Lubbock. Reese is far more likely, and may be confused with the former Air Force Base outside of Lubbock. Buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Cherokee Co., TX. Confusion exists as to whether he had a third wife, named Mary. Mary shows up in the 1870 census married to James. Her age is given as 22, and her birthplace is Georgia. James also shows as Georgia, so the information may be incorrect. In any case, Mary at 22 would only be marginally suited to be the mother of the two elder children ascribed to Sarah (Sally) King. It does not seem likely that the Mary in 1870 is confused with Sarah (Sally) King, and must therefore be a third wife. It seems possible, therefore, that the third child, Sallie, born in Mar-Apr 1870, was the daughter of Mary. The first child, known as Mila, appears safely ascribed to Sarah (Sally) King. That leaves in question the mother of John. For John's birth, Mary would have been 19, but it seems more likely that the mother was Sarah (Sally ) King, and raises the possibility that she died in childbirth with him.

In the 1870 census, moreover, there is a housekeeper named Mila Nixon, ae 50, from Georgia. This must be the source of the name of the first child. The relationship with the Nixon family is not clear. Parents: Stanmore Butler (Stanmore) TEMPLE-16123 and Elizabeth HICKMAN-16126.

He must be confused with another J.A. Temple, whose death date is variously reported as either 17 or 18 Dec 1893. In addition to having had two children after that date, James A. Temple appears in the land records of Bradley Co., AR on 12 Aug 1901. I cannot explain the 1893 confusion. Name appears with different spellings in different censuses.
