Francis M. Temple, farmer, was born June 2, 1830, in Williamson County, Tenn., and is a son of Roderick and Mary (Lee) Temple, natives of Virginia. The father immigrated to Tennessee alone when a young man, and located in Williamson County, and after his marriage moved to Davidson County, where he died in 1849. The mother went to Tennessee by wagon when a girl. She bore Mr. Temple eleven children, three of whom are living: Narcissus, Francis M. and William. Hubbard, James, Alexander, Mary, Eliza, Maria, Frederick and one other are deceased. Mrs. Temple died in Arkansas July 30, 1884, aged eighty-five. The maternal grandparents of our subject were early settlers of Tennessee, and there passed their lives. Francis M. Temple was reared upon a farm in Tennessee, and attended school but six months. He had a natural gift for mechanics, but has engaged in farming principally. After his father's death he cared for the family, and September 28, 1854, married Mary Roselle, who bore him two children, James M. and William A. Mrs. Temple died June 15, 1857, and March 29, 1863, he married Minerva Lewis, daughter of Henry and Jane A. (Hobaugh) Lewis, natives of Kentucky and Missouri, respectively. Mrs. Temple was born in Texas County, Mo., and when eight years of age came to Arkansas. She is the mother of seven children: Mary T., Francis M., Charles H., Sarah E., Narcissus I., Thomas Ivy and Edna. Mr. Temple enlisted in the United States army in 1862, joining Company D, First Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry, and being discharged at Fayetteville in 1865. Among other [p.1202] battles he was present at Prairie Grove, Fayetteville and Elkhorn. Mr. Temple came to Crawford County in 1850, settling near Flat Rock, and three years later moved near Ollivar Spring, where he lived three years. He then lived two miles north of this place for several years, and then settled where he now resides. He owns 160 acres, seventy-five of which are cultivated. He is a public-spirited man, and has given a lot on which to erect a school building. Himself and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is a Republican, and a member of the G. A. R.

Francis P. Temple enlisted in Co. C, 1st Louisiana Cavalry, at New Orleans, Louisiana, on March 4, 1862. He was discharged before August 31, 1862; then reenlisted at Bayou Sara, Louisiana, on December 12, 1862, and served with this command to the end of the war. He was a prisoner of war, and paroled at Gainesville, Alabama, on May 12, 1865. His residence was listed as Bayou Sara, Louisiana. He appears on the rolls as Frank Temple. Co. C, 1st Louisiana Cavalry, was recruited in West Feliciana Parish. He served in the military about 1868 in MS. In August 1870 Francis was a dry goods salesman in Yalobusha Co., MS.²⁷⁹⁵² He lived in MS between 1871 and 1875.²⁷⁹⁵⁰ Dates derived from birth places of his children. Actual duration may have been longer. In June 1880 he was a bookkeeper in Coffeeville, Yalobusha, MS.²⁷⁹⁵¹ Before 1883 Francis was in AR.²⁷⁹⁵⁰ He died on 4 December 1886.¹³³⁸³ Sometimes given as James, unless there is confusion with another person. Francis Pliny Fisk (Francisco) TEMPLE^{39503,39504,39505,39506,39507,39508} was born on 13 February 1822 in Reading, Middlesex, MA.^39503,39509 Between 1841 and 1849 he was a Clerk in Jonathan Temple's Store in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.³⁹⁵¹⁰ As his half-brother Jonathan's junior by 26 years, he was born after Jonathan went to sea and moved to California. When F.P.F. arrived in Los Angeles, he had never met his brother. In 1841 he was in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.^39504,39510 Francis appeared in the census in 1850 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.³⁹⁵¹¹ He owner of Alcatraz Island about 1850 in San Francisco, San Francisco, CA.³⁹⁵¹² Alcatraz Island was one of the points in the bay of San Francisco chosen for defense, but like many of the other such sites, it was covered by private claims. Also known as Bird and White Island, it was purchased by California Governor John C. Fremont for $ 5,000, and batteries were under construction by 1854, but that is not the whole story. "The Bay of San Francisco : the metropolis of the Pacific Coast and its suburban cities: a history" described the sequence of events as follow:
"The island was granted in 1846 by Gov. Pio Pico to William Workman, who transferred it to F.P.F. Temple, who sold it to Fremont. It is understood that Fremont never paid the purchase money, and yet sold it to Palmer, Cook and Company. Temple sued Fremont for it. Palmer, Cook and Company sued the Government, but their claim was dismissed." This was reported in the Sacramento Union, 14 Feb 1856. The outcome of Don Francisco's suit is not known to me.

Jason Edward Temple, a grandson of Francis Pliny Fisk III, mentioned that he thought his grandfather's papers included the original deeds to Alcatraz, San Clemente Island, and Mission San Gabriel. In July 1860 he was a ranchero in El Monte, Los Angeles, CA.³⁹⁵¹³ Between 1868 and 1871 Francis was a banker in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.^39514,39515 Together with his father-in-law William Workman and Isaias W. Hellman, opened the first bank in Los Angeles. The History of Downey explains that the partnership was largely held together by Hellman, who, though only 25, was the financial wizard behind the bank. It seems that "Temple was public spirited and easily taken in by wild-eyed dreamers and schemes with grandiose plans of development and money-making. Workman was more interested in developing his ranch at La Puente and took little concern in the bank. Hellman soon became uneasy with the relationship and in January of 1871, bought out his partners; and joined with John Downey. They organized under the title Farmers and Merchants Bank. It guided Southern California's economic development well down into the present century." See more on this bank under Don Francisco's next attempt at banking. In Jul 1866, he bought the north unit of the Fulton and Main Street block and the People's Market. He appeared in the census in 1870 in El Monte, Los Angeles, CA.³⁹⁵¹⁶ He a traveler on the Overland Train in 1870 in Ogden, Weber, UT.³⁹⁵¹⁷ Took the Overland Train from Ogden Utah, departing 20 Aug 1870 and arriving in Oakland, CA on 22 Aug 1870. Accompanied by W. Temple, who was most likely his son William. Between 1871 and 1876 Francis was a banker in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.^39514,39515 After dissolving his earlier bank, Temple and Workman started another on Temple Block in Los Angeles. However, Temple was apparently not a banker by inclination, and the bank failed. The History of Beverly Hills, although incorrectly confusing Don Francisco with his brother Don Juan, explained that unsecured loans were given to "sharpers," on the basis of character only. These obviously bad investments failed, and brought the bank down. There was an accusation that the bank manager was in collusion with the "sharpers," but the history gives nothing further on that.

In August, 1875, a run on the Bank of California led its president, William C. Ralston, to commit suicide when he could not cover the withdrawals. This led to suspicions about other banks that were involved with the Bank of California, among them Temple-Workman. In October 1875, every bank in California closed their doors. The first to reopen was Hellman's Farmer's and Merchants Bank, which had been the enterprise in which Temple and Workman had been partners. Temple-Workman did not reopen until December, based on a high interest loan from "Lucky" Baldwin, a Comstock millionaire. But the terms of the loan undermined confidence in the Temple-Workman bank. Within a month, he still had more outstanding bad loans, and the loan from Baldwin had been used up. On 12 Jan 1876, the doors were closed for the last time. When Workman's ranch was taken away as part of the closure, he shot himself. Temple suffered a paralytic stroke. He associated with the Los Angeles and Independence Railroad in 1874 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.³⁹⁵¹⁸ Served briefly as President of the road, but turned this over to John P. Jones in late 1874. He died on 27 April 1880 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.^{8252,9055,39503,39519} Died at Rancho La Merced of apoplexy. Buried in El Campo Santo Cemetery, Industry, Los Angeles, CA. Francis has reference number RLT # 375.³⁹⁵²⁰ Built the Temple Block in Los Angeles. Temple Street in LA is named for him.

Temple (Francis Pliny F.), 1841, native of Mass., who came on the Tasso at the age of 20, engaging in trade at Los Ang. with his brother John. iv. 279. Later he established a stock rancho at S. Emigdio, near Ft Tejon; was a member of the banking firm of Hellman, T., & Co. from '68, and from '72 of T. & Workman. He died in '80 at his rancho of La Merced. iv. 635; v. 320; leaving a widow-the daughter of Wm Workman-and several children. He took but slight part in politics, but was always prominent in business affairs. All his property was lost by the failure of the banking firm in '75. (His partner, Worden, committed suicide over the affair.)

This last write-up is a bit inaccurate. Temple went into business with his father-in-law, William Workman, and together they formed the Temple and Workman Bank in Los Angeles in 1871. The bank failed in the panic of 1875, causing both Temple and Workman to lose all their possessions. Workman subsequently committed suicide.

In the 1850 Census of California, he appears in Los Angeles using the name Francisco. He took the name after conversion to Catholicism in order to marry Antonia. His friends, however, called him "Templito" due to his short stature.

When the banking house of Temple Workman failed, in 1875, its owners borrowed $225,000 from E. J. Baldwin, of San Francisco, with interest at 1 1/4% per month, compounded monthly. Included in the mortgage were 40,000 acres of the Puente Rancho, owned by William Workman, the Temple Block at the junction of Temple, Spring and Main streets, a valuable piece of property on Spring Street, in Los Angeles, where the city hall is now being built, and a half interest in the Rancho Las Cienegas hereinbefore described. To accommodate his friend, F. P. F. Temple, of Temple Workman, Juan Mateo Sanchez included his three properties, the Merced, the Potrero Grande and the Felipe Lugo, in the mortgage. Workman committed suicide, Temple had a stroke of paralysis, lingered for a time, and died.

The Temple Workman Bank failed in September, 1875; opened for a time on money borrowed from E. J. Baldwin, and closed permanently in June, 1876.

Harris Newmark recalled of him:

Another citizen of Los Angeles who owned much property when I came, and who lived upon his ranch, was Francis Phinney Fisk Temple, one of the first Los Angeles supervisors, a man exceptionally modest and known among his Spanish-speaking friends as Templito, because of his five feet four stature. He came here, by way of the Horn, in 1841, when he was but nineteen years of age, and for a while was in business with his brother John. Marrying Senorita Antonia Margarita Workman, however, on September 30th, 1845, Francis made his home at La Merced Ranch, twelve miles east of Los Angeles, in the San Gabriel Valley, where he had a spacious and hospitable adobe after the old Spanish style, shaped something like a U, and about seventy by one hundred and ten feet in size. Around this house, later destroyed by fire, Temple planted twenty acres of fruit trees and fifty thousand or more vines, arranging the whole in a garden partly enclosed by a fence the exception rather than the rule for even a country nabob of that time. Templito also owned other ranches many miles in extent; but misfortune overtook him, and by the nineties his estate possessed scarcely a single acre of land in either the city or the county of Los Angeles; and he breathed his last in a rude sheep herder's camp in a corner of one of his famous properties.

The family ended up with quite a few land holdings in addition tot he ranchos mentioned. Research by Jason Edward Temple, <jasontemple@msn.com>, grandson of Francis Pliny Fisk Temple III, indicated that the family (Thomas Edward Temple specifically) may still have the original deeds for the family's ownership of Alcatraz, San Clemente and Mission San Gabriel. Married at Mission San Gabriel in Los Angeles. City records indicate a date one day earlier, on 28 September.
