Suicide - On Monday of last week, Ambrosius Temple committed suicide by shooting himself. Domestic trouble and consequent partial derangement of mind, no doubt led to the act, his wife having left him several months ago. When found, his gun lay on one side and ramrod on the other, and as the charge entered his heart, it is supposed he placed the butt of the gun against the wall and discharged it with the ramrod. A book was found on his person in which he had written two days before that he had intended to do just as he did. Sometimes appears as Templer, as in 1875 state census. Given as Amason or Amacon with germanic spelling in 1860, but it was the phonetic form of Emerson. His family was broken up after his death, with his youngest children staying with his widow after her remarriage to Albert Butterfield, and Emerson, Ernest and Charles being taken in by people for whom I can find no particular familial ties, J.M. and R.A. The Vital Records of Deerfield give Amos filing an intention to marry Mary D. Torrey of Leverett on 25 Mar 1841. The solution presented here is based on research by Charlotte Holbrook, who found the joint tombstone of Amos (1815-1892) and Francis R. (1815-1908) in Wilmington, VT.
