Rebecca LEIGHTON was born on 14 February 1682 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.¹⁹³³⁷ The Hartwell genealogy is part of the confusion between Rebecca Hartwell and Rebecca Leighton, with both women marrying Temples. In the case of Rebecca Leighton, however, the birth date of 14 Feb 1682 is probably wrong, and actually applies to Rebecca Hartwell who married Abraham Temple. No doubt, Rebecca Leighton had a birth date very close to the date of Rebecca Hartwell's, and there is sufficient confusion over the dates for both of these women that either could have had this birth date. The confusion over these two women requires some research in original documentation to sort it out. She died on 9 March 1776 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.^21,23036 Buried in Oldest Cemetery, Concord, MA. Some sources give 29 Mar, but her gravestone says she "departed this life March y 9th AD 1770 in y 94th year of her age." Her dates seem to be confused with those of Rebecca Hartwell, who married Richard's brother Abraham. The DAR genealogies show Simon Hayward as the first husband of Rebecca Hartwell, not Rebecca Leighton. The 23 Oct 1705 marriage date is attached to their marriage as well. It seems most likely that the 1705 date actually is the marriage of Rebecca to Simon Haywood, the latter died in 1719. The marriage of Rebecca Leighton to Richard Temple in 1734 seems very solid, and therefore I concluded that the confusion is based on the marriage of Rebecca Hartwell, with a similar birth date, who married Abraham Temple, not in 1705, but in 1719. The will of Abraham Temple named all his children in such a way that they could really only have been the issue of his first wife, Phoebe, who died in 1719, probably as a result of childbirth with their son, Return Temple.
