Enumerated as John Semple in 1860. He apparently is the John T. Temple who married Sarah Thomson, daughter of Jesse Lewis and Rhoda (Wharton) Thomson of Bedford Co., VA. However, that marriage took place in 1852, apparently in Bedford Co., VA, and it is not clear how that is possible. However, circumstantial evidence and census information about Sarah and her sister Isabella force the conclusion that John T. Temple married Sarah in 1852, and that he was the same John Taylor Temple later found back in MO. The story is confusing, and requires some explanation, but there seems little doubt it is so. Considerable credit goes to Pete Temple of La Verne, CA, whose research helped pull this together. Parents: Reverend John (Jack) TEMPLE-4501 and Alice TAYLOR-5302. Temple, better known as Uncle Tom, not only Hardin, but Calhoun county loses an honest upright citizen; a man whose word was as good as his bond; one, who spoke no ill of his neighbor and who lived at peace with his fellowman at all times. Probably no man in this community, who has been summoned by death, had more genuine friends than Uncle Tom and the general expressions heard, when his death was announced, were, "He was a good man." from Calhoun Times, April 27, 1916. He was buried in the Hardin Cemetery, Hardin, Calhoun, IL. He has reference number RLT # U2640.1060 Raised in the household of John Hise after his father went west and died. Appeared as John in 1910. His association as the son of Orrin Clifford and Rachel (Swearingen) Temple is based on timing, location, the maiden name of Orrin's mother, and the naming convention in Orrin's generation of a middle name of Todd. He moved about 1843 in Lincoln Co., MO.108016 In September 1850 John was a carpenter in Greene Twp., Beaver, PA.32787 Enumerated without his children. Buried in Mill Creek Hill Cemetery, Hookstown, PA. John is perplexing, because his children were raised by John Hise after he allegedly went west to mine and never returned. His wife was said to have died in 1843. His children, James, William and Jane, appeared with William and Rebecca Sitton in 1860, while his son John was with John Hise - so something was up. However, he was clearly with his wife in the 1880 census, so if he went west, he returned to a wife risen from the dead. Clearly, some confusion exists in the reporting. His name also appears with the German spelling in 1850. Parents: William TEMPLE-21084 and Jane TRIMBLE-21085. Spouse: Jane EWING-21089. Jane EWING and John Trimble TEMPLE were married about 1838.
