They identified Mary by an incident when she was very young, when a goose bit off part of her earlobe.

Research by Cynthia Stanley, <cjstanley@sbcglobal.net>, citing Alice Mix Temple's boot, "Five Generations of Jamiesons and Temples 1840-1950,) p. 5, her surname was Garrigan. She is likely the Mary Garigan that was enumerated in the 7th ward of Albany, NY in Aug 1850, in the R.C. Asylum, without her parents. Nothing more is known about the R.C. Asylum. There was also and Elisah Garigan ae 16 in that same household, but her birthplace was Ireland, possibly giving a clue that Mary was first generation in the US.
